I was just given the diagnosis of bipolar 2 and bulimia, and I'm really struggling to keep the bulimia under control as I go into school this fall. I'm seeing a psychologist and a psychiatrist, have a stellar diet and exercise plan, and although I gained 30lbs this spring, I managed to lose 10 of it. My problem is that one of my mood stabilizers (lamictal) cancels out the appetite-suppressant affect of the other one (topamax).
For the final two weeks that I was on only topamax the appetite-suppresant properties kicked in, and for the first time I can remember I felt full. Unfortunately, if I want to try to get back to that point, I risk mental impairment (side affect of topamax). I don't know how concerned I should be about this side affect (one nurse I had was on 300 mg and had no complaints) but for a college student it's not something that you want to risk. I've researched drugs in this area, and I'm certainly not expecting to take a pill and have everything solved, but I know that there must be other options.
Are there any other medications similar to topamax where a side affect is appetite-suppression? My current psychiatrist is no help: she told me that we should focus on my bipolar, and to sideline the bulimia because "it's not like you're starving to death." Obviously I'm switching psychiatrists; any suggestions?
