I met with a new pdoc today to get my meds figured out and I am almost surprised the medication he wrote for me. Topamax - it is suppose to be a mood stabilizer I get that part although he knows about my ed and the side effects is weight loss - kills your appetite ?? Not sure thats a wise choice for someone anorexic. My ed is having field day with this and I been apprehensive in the past about take meds this one I actually dropped off at pharmacy. Has anyone else been on this?

Yes, I've been on Topamax for several years. It works quite well as a mood stabilizer and doesn't cause the weight gain that many other similar drugs do.

Having an ed, I couldn't cope with being on a medication that caused a weight gain--this is one reason my doctor prescribed the Topamax. It really shouldn't be too much of a problem for you. It doesn't so much kill your appetite...it just doesn't make you gain.

Well maybe on that note I will give it a try and thats reason I never took any meds. I was terrified of the wt gain on them. What kind of side effects did you experience at first? I just hope it doesnt make me zombie like and extremely tired.

I've been on topomax for years primarily for migraines and anti seizure med. It also works for mood. I've found the wt loss side effect is not significant. My pdoc knows I'm anorexic and hasn't had an issue with it. You may lose initially but it doesn't continue.

I was on Topomax for eight months. I went on it as a mood stablizier as I was SICK of SSRI's and add on antipsychotics . They seemed to trigger my eating disorder. Initially I loved being on it. I could see how it dulled me cognitively . .. I think that's the "mood stabilizing" effect of the medication and it definitely had the added benefit of depressing my urge to binge. The problem is that I got more and more "dull" cognitively and I started having neurological symptoms of severe tingling and zapping in my extremities and my face. I finally had to ween off of it and stay off of it.

I regret not being able to take it because it really had a dampening effect on my eating disorder . . . not much as a mood stabilizer because I work at a very demanding job that required me to be present and on top of my game all the time. I do know other people who have had great success with the medication and I hope that's the case for you. I know that medications effect people differently! Good luck.

I sorta have a plan..will address two concerns at once.
Going to a mood disorder program - to help me learn how to cope differently because my way isnt good and I am tired of the battle. Secondly by attending that program I will be in a safe place to try the med out and have support around me if needed.

Next obstacle is I need to figure out how to work a nutritionist into the plan. I am still logging my meals and am restricting when it comes to adding fats into the plan. Calories arent where they should be especially with the amount of physical work I do....need to figure that all out..

thx all
