I have bipolar, sever anxiety, depression and an eating disorder. What I am find most challenging at the present is my eating disorder. Last year I was extremely thin...then I gained a lot of weight in a short time. I know it is emotional eating....but I don't know how to stop. Any suggestions?

Hi, I have the same disorders as you, though the eating disorder is in remission. It struck me that you said "what I find most challenging at present is my ED," cause that's exactly how I felt.
Are you on any medications? They can cause an increase or decrease in your appetite, and in some cases stimulants or anti-depressants are used to help with the latter. Both really helped me to have fewer binge eating episodes (and therapy, but not having incessant urges to eat let me tackle emotional issues). Aside from dealing with the issues themselves, I've found that the next best way to stop an episode of emotional eating is to control your environment (in a healthy, not a depriving way). I couldn't live with my friends anymore since they always kept TONS of food around, since the social hangout was always the kitchen, and since the prime time for socializing in the kitchen was 12-3am. I always assumed I was weak, and that's why my binges were so bad, but in fact all of my friends had gained a little weight since moving in together. Now I only keep healthy foods in my house, and try not to bring things like chocolate, pizza, or cake, back home. Not that it eliminates binges (if I really "need" the food I'll eventually go out and get it) but at least it doesn't guarantee them. Jessie |

Jessie,
Thank you so much for your sweet and helpful note. My eating disorder had been in check for years and years....and now it has reared it's ugly head. I have a lot to deal with emotionally which I am doing with a spiritual therapist who is fabulous....so much has been revealed. I also have a psychiatrist, and am on many meds. I have had a difficult time with meds....and for now feel that I am on the best I can be. I must run as I have some errands to do...then am going to visit my Dad and his wife. Take care and thank you. Susie |

Hi Susie, just wanted to let you know my support is there as well. I suffer from anxiety, depression and an ED as too, and I know how lonely it can be. You seem strong and determined to get a grasp on things, so keep your positive attitude. I love that you are seeing a spirituality therapist! How do you like it??
