I don't know if I have an eating disorder or not. I regularly binge and purge but not always together. Sometimes I like the feeling of fullness I get when I eat too much and so don't purge. Sometimes I purge without binging because I like the feeling of relief and aliveness it gives me. I'd say I binge about once a day and purge maybe twice. I don't think I'm preoccupied with my weight. Also, I'm overweight. Can I be overweight and have an eating disorder?

I've recently been doing both a lot as I find Christmas quite stressful and I can't self harm in case my family find out. My throat is sore, my knuckles are bleeding and my stomach muscles ache from all the retching. I realize that this is probably doing me more harm than the self harm which my psychiatrist knows about but I am too ashamed to discuss it with him in case he doesn't believe me. Is this an eating disorder? Should I try to discuss it with someone? Would eating disorder services even take me seriously?

Hello |Brokengirl. Can I just say a huge
WELLCOME to PC and everything it has to offer. Regarding your questions about eating disorders.......................I'm no Dr. so I can't diagnose or advise but I am somebody who had eating disorders for over 30 years. I've been hospitalised for anorexia in the early days, like you I've gone through massive binge times, also like you sometimes with or without purging, sometimes starving and purging for weeks or months. At the moment I severely restrict what I eat, but how long that will last I don't know. Please go and tell your Dr. the truth about whats been going on, especially as you are now suffering physical signs and it won't be long before this eating thing will completely take over your life, as I suspect it has already. Different people, both men and women, cope in different ways and stress is usually at the base of it all. I'd honestly contact you health worker or Dr. and go from there. Do let us know how you get along. Take care now. XX
Thanks for this!

Yes you can have an eating disorder and be over weight. I've heard that a lot of people with bulimia are actually larger because of the binging. When you purge you don't get rid of all of the stuff that you binge. I'd talk to someone if this is becoming a problem, which it sounds like it is. Good luck I hope they take you seriously
