Hi. I'm new here. Very nervous.

Just wondering if there is anyone else out there who began to suffer from an ED later in life. Everything I've read states that it is usually teens...I'm 26 and just now beginning.

I'm just wondering why now. I never struggled with it before. Just seems so out of sorts. Kinda makes me feel more alone or different.

First of all, welcome

I also have read that EDs are more common in teenagers. However, as with most illness, it may be more common then, but can also occur outside of the usual time. Measles, for example, usually strikes in childhood but adults can get it too. I'm sure you have read that EDs can strike at any age... You're not different in any way because of starting later. I think it is mainly that younger children/teenagers get the attention because they are minors and so need treatment, whereas adults can choose whether or not to go to a doctor, and so may never be officially diagnosed, and their doctor may never learn of any eating issues.

Dear whynow,

welcome to PC!

I am 35, and was just diagnosed with anorexia a few months ago.
You are not alone!!

Have you talked to a therapist about this? A T may be able to help you get to the root issues of why you are struggling with this now.

Feel free to PM me if you ever think it would help.
Best wishes,
ktgirl

Thank you so much for the welcome and the responses.

I have not seen a T...I believe I know the root cause, I just don't want to fix it. I know that probably doesn't make sense, but...well, shoot, it doesn't even make sense enough for me to add a "but".

My daughter passed away two years ago...and I now have a 1 year old. While I thought I was handling it all very well, I also know deep down that I am trying to make myself the perfect mom for my second child to make up for what happened to the first. Even though it was out of my control.

I developed anorexia at 35. I recovered rather quickly. I had a good therapist, doctor, and husband. But today, at age 37, I am now falling back into the same habits.

I am so sorry to hear about your daughter.
That must be so difficult to deal with.
I really hope you try to seek some support and healing through therapy.
You don't have to "fix" anything yet. Just go see what it is about.
You need to be able to take care of yourself, so that you can be there
for your 1 year old.

I'm sorry to hear you're falling back.
Are you going back to see your T again?

I am so, so sorry about your daughter.

The "perfect" mom for your little one year old is a mom who is healthy. Please do what you need to do to take care of yourself...even if it means seeing a T.

Sending you many many
