I have had one therapist turn me away because I required too much work.

BPD was never specifically stated but that is what I believe was the cause.

Hello there!

Here is a link all about BPD Borderline Personality Disorder | Psych Central and treatment Borderline Personality Disorder Treatment | Psych Central

You'll see reading through that, some people with BPD naturally find it difficult to trust and interact with other people. So although therapy (plus medication) is the very best thing for BPD, often the person having therapy finds it difficult to stay in the treatment. Does that make sense?

I do know that getting treatment on the NHS isn't that easy. Your GP should refer you to a psychiatrist and community mental health services, please also ask to be referred to a psychologist for therapy. A clinical psychologist would be the best as they are trained in complex mental health issues. Good luck!

Hi, moodycow. I have a long history with bpd, and I, too, have observed that we borderlines aren't the most popular patients in the psychiatric world.

Of course, as borderlines, we are sensitive to rejection and abandonment, anyway, so this generally negative reaction from folks who are supposed to be helping us doesn't help one bit.

However, by talking to therapists and observing my own history of interactions with them and other mental-health professionals, I have learned to understand why. First of all, yes, we can be very demanding and time-consuming. I used to call one of my therapists at least three times a week outside of our weekly sessions. I always thought I had good reasons to do so, but looking back, I am embarrassed about it. I even used to write her letters between our sessions! Gee, what if all her patients did that?

Second, our childhood history that led us to develop what's called a "borderline personality" also created a lot of rage in us. I did realize it was like I was a needy child whose mom wasn't giving me what I wanted, and I was mad about it. I would blow up at people very easily and even see slights that weren't there. And all these feelings can particularly be directed toward therapists and other professionals. They never know when we are going to light into them. And also we tend to just get mad and up and quit on them. Some of us can go from one therapist to another, never satisfied. Thus, it's frustrating for them to try to work with us.

That's what I have observed, anyway. I hope some of what I said has been helpful, since I can speak from wearing shoes like your own.

As far as I know, therapists who choose to treat patients with BPD have only a small number of BPD patients at any given time since BPD patients usually require extra time and attention from the therapist. So, if you go to a therapist who is already treating their quota of BPD patients they should refer you to a colleague.

That's true, Sister Rags. One therapist told me that her limit was three.

Plus, some professionals just don't feel comfortable working with borderlines. Perhaps they have had some bad experiences, especially from an angry borderline, or they don't feel able to deal with the frequent mood shifts and other difficulties in trying to do effective therapy with them.

I did have one psychiatrist's office tell me point blank that the psychiatrist I was interested in did not take on borderlines.

Yes, and the therapist should have the appropriate training, experience, and support for themselves to practice psychotherapy with a BPD patient. If the therapist or p-doc doesn't have that experience I would hope s/he would be honest about it.

I was not treated well by doctors way back in the 1960's you know back then people were label "crazy", "mental", and seemed like nobody cared!!!! But in 1974 with the birth of my last child, I was suppose to have a woman doctor, but she was from India, and a family from India came to the clinic before my appointment with my new born, and I was given a young Jewish Doctor and I Believe to this day THE ALMIGHTY GODHEAD WAS AT WORK for me and my family of now 4 children!!!! He was the most understanding Doctor I had ever had! He noticed right away I was having "pych" issuses! He checked out my new born, then he asked the Nurse to take my 4 children to the playroom! Then he took time to talk to me[I was not like I am today-better, but out of control and highly suicidal] and I told him how this psychologist was treating me, hang up the phone on me, ect.... and he told me he had a friend a Psychiatrist and he loves to help people, he is caring, patient, ect.. and he even offered to be in the room as well if that would make me more comfortable! The Psychiatrist was Jewish as well!!! A week later we met and he was jus as Our New Family Doctor said!!!!! Oh, I was so bad off way back then, I could not be touched in any way: no hand shakes, no hand resting on my shoulder, ect... could not even face anyone when I was spoken to!
I was with this Psychiatrist for 11yrs. before he moved out of state, but he had had 3 of his paitients he gave his new office phone number to! He was a BLESSING to anyone who was under him for care!!!!! But I lost tract of him 15yrs. ago!!!! I am nothing like what I use to be like always out tryng to kill myself, I still have those desires, but THE ALMIGHTY NEVER Let me succeed!
I have no one to talk to anymore, that seems to care, all they want to do is stick you in a mental hospital[and of course when you are poor, it is more like jail, with no caring!] so now I am by myself with no one who cares, no one to talk to how I am feeling inside!!!! So the answer to your question, there are people [Drs. out there that do care, maybe they are just more harder to find!]
I have not found any since Dr. B-----! I was given a name of a Counselor[a woman in CA] when I lived there! It was out of a church in Orville, CA They have a man Counselor for men, and 2 women for women, but if you are thinking thoughts of ending your life they have to 2 women work together with the person!!!! These Counselors are[or should I say was-since I no longer live in CA] and it was so great if you are a Christian they PRAY Before and After the session!!!! You Know as time goes by there has been more understanding of these Mental Problems and I PRAY That You Find Someone who is Caring, Understanding, and Patient as the ones GOD BROUGHT INTO My life!!!!! Whom I miss dearly, because you could be open and honest with them!!!! I will keep you in my PRAYERS!!! MAY THE ALMIGHTY GODHEAD BLESS YOU and KEEP YOU!!!!
