How do we tell what's real and what's not? If I were in a hallucination and aske wouldn't the hallucination just tell me it's real?

We don't...until it's past.

I have trouble separating reality from illusion in the moment when it happens.

Hello monkeybrains21,

The only sure way is to ask someone else and check it out with them The other thing you can do is to try grounding techniques Grounding Techniques For example, touching real objects around you using your senses to bring you back into reality.

I've done some hallucinogens in the past and know what they feel like and no matter what I touched nothing brought me out of it. When I dream(i think try are dreams) I am constantly touching my surroundings and it all feels real. Even pain is real. There's no difference in feelings only difference in usually what happens. I know zombies and aliens as giant praying mantis aren't real so that's dream. But then there's the other stuff that is so real and causes physical pain. Almost as if my dreams become real. The memories are there the feelings and pain. Yet they occurred while I think I'm asleep.

I have musical hallucinations from time to time. Mostly happens when I'm trying to go to bed at night. I hear what seems a radio station playing some song, that I've never heard of.
Only way I can tell if its real or not is by putting my fingers in my ear and raising my head to see if I can still hear it. For the most part it stops, but some times it doesn't(which is rare).

I get a ringing in one ear sometimes usually at night. Anyways in not sure it's real cuz if I put my hand over my ear it's gone but if I don't it goes on for about a minute or 2. If uve ever seen windtalkers the movie when Nicholas cages character has a grenade go off by his ear, that ringing he heard I the same ringing I hear. It's usually only one ear but it's not always the same. But I hear other things I don't think are real cuz when I look for te source none is found.

Well, ringing in the ear may not be a hallucination, it may be a symptom of tinnitus Tinnitus - NHS Choices It's worth getting it checked out by your doctor.

Makes total sense. A few yrs ago I took a nasty hit to my jaw and it fractured and dislocated. It got so jammed to one side it perforate my ear drum and my whole jaw line was bruised. Since I didn't go to dr right away, cuz I just don't like drs, I relocated myself but the swelling of soft tissue set my jaw off. Now my jaw is misaligned and the dr i saw 3days after the incident said to realign I'd have to get it wired shut

I think it can take time and experience for someone to learn to distinguish and decide what is real and what is not. In the moment it can be quite hard to tell!

My Boyfriend keeps telling me he can hear music in his head, almost like it's his own personal jukebox. He also say's people around him, in the psychiatric center he's in at the moment all seem to react to it.

It's hard to separate them. I try and think that if it's something that seems too...'out there'...then it's possibly a hallucination. But you never know for sure, which sucks.

IDK.

The only time I knew I was hallucinating was when I was taking Lunesta... wonderful (they don't have the glowing iridescent butterfly in their commercials without a reason folks) but the night terrors were equally horrifying and I had to go off it.

Other than that period of time, I have no idea if I hallucinate It all looks bad to me lately.

There were times I would call my husband to come and look at this. He would look and say there was nothing there. It has happened twice. I got on a few meds that helped with that. The one Im now helps a lot.

I used to see spiders and webs the most. A few times they were really scary. I saw a full dressed knight with this horse looking at me beside my bed. Another time I saw a little girl running behind my door to hide. Ive also saw what looked like some sort of toy bouncing up and down and it was making a swirling noise. Scared me to death.

Normally it happened at night or when I was laying down. Only in my bedroom.
