I root for a professional baseball team that hasn't won a World Series in several decades. When I was young I saw them win twice but didn't appreciate it as much as I would not because I didn't realize what they had accomplished. It happened very quickly after I started following this team. I fear that I will die before they win another World Series. They have a slight chance this year--but I would think it probably won't happen. As a Christian I know that I am sinning because I am making something a god. I'm also not putting my trust in God that things will turn out as they should. I know that it is for entertainment and should not be my life. I am blowing up something that in the long run isn't important. A few years ago my team lost a Game 163 and I went through serious depression and had "flashbacks" from it for two years. I don't want that to happen again. I don't want to get into a sports discussion. I want to remove this wall. I want to know what I can do. I have taken it to God and confessed that I am making a god of something that I should not. I am asking for direction in this.

Hmmmm I am not sure. I would think of it as similar to an addiction or an obsession.

That is interesting, is there any particular reason you can figure out about why you are so attached to the sport and specific team? But yeah certainly sounds like a kind of unhealthy obsession, which makes your life harder...do you have a therapist or anyone to address this with, maybe they could help with it. I don't really have any advice since I don't really even so much as care about any sport really, might watch a football game with people or whatever if I am with a group and they want to watch it but not interested enough to follow it myself.

Hello GailH, when we latch on to something like this, it usually means that things aren't right for us in the real world. Avoiding the real issues. It would be a good idea to seek therapy and look deeper into this.

Red Sox fan here. I know what you mean. I know so many that lived their lives without seeing that 2004 win.
When thousands of people are going through an impassioned feeling of yearning, difficult to cast aside as an individual experience.
How much have you been immersing yourself?
I'm currently, going through watching from a distance of a horrendous season. I was fortunate to be old enough to cherish the couple wins I saw.

If you aren't given a terminal time frame, then I say, don't give up hope, yet, for your team. Might be frustrating never knowing if you'll experience that in your fan community, but don't give up hope, you never know.

Know how many times, before 2004, I heard, Maybe this will be the year?
