My swimming class has only woman in it. Should I still take it?

I am 22 year old guy finally deciding to take a swimming lesson. I went on Saturday and the class looks to have only women in it so I will be the only guy. They all look in their 30s and maybe some younger but still older than me. I called my mom and said I can't go and to cancel the lesson. She said she will if I really want to. Is this a valid concern or am I worried over nothing?

fmpro, You will be so busy trying to learn to swim you will hardly notice the others in the group. Go for it!

It's only as weird as you make it to be. Go with it, laugh at the situation ("um, is this a ladies only class?" or "Woohoo! I like my odds! "

Swimming is an important skill, and once you get past it, you'll forget about the male female thing. We're all just humans.

Why would it be embarrassing? And why does it matter what they think? You are there for you to learn a skill. Focus on that because it's the only thing that matters.

Do what you want to do. Don't let other people stop you from living your life.

From personal experience learned too late....live your life as much as you can while you can.

On the other hand, I'm wondering why a 22 year old guy is relying on his mother to schedule swimming classes. There's more to this story. What's up with that ?

If you're shirt shy get a rash guard. Basically a swim shirt.

I thought about this and if i had the opportunity of attending a mostly male class i wouldn't go.....there's no shame in not doing something you're uncomfortable with. Can you not explain your concern to someone understanding at the help desk? There must be some mixed classes you can attend? Maybe just go really early or late so that it's most quietly anyway...

Bad Boy, What is wrong with asking a family member, in this case his mom, about swimming lessons?

A lot , Because he is getting advice regarding how a Woman would see it , not a Man.

That's not really why he posted this, I'm sure if he wanted to share or ask for help with that he would. Sorry, hit a sore spot with me. I'm a 20 year old woman with severe anxiety and sometimes my mom makes my appointments for me. I'm working on it but wouldn't want anyone calling me out on it when I'm asking for advice with something else.


fmpro, I agree with what someone else said, ask if they have a mixed swimming class, if they do great, if not try the one with the women, if you hate it you don't have to go back

He is receiving biased emotional based advice from his mother , when he should be receiving solid logical advice from a man.

Answer = " Parental Enmeshment ".

Dude , You are not responsible for the females emotional welfare , it's their problem. Focus on yourself and don't care what others think.

fmpro, Let us know how the lessons go. I had to learn to swim as therapy after a car accident. I had a difficult time with breathing and relaxation in the water. My very best to you!

Bingo! The issue with the swimming class is merely a symptom of a larger underlying problem. To address the symptom while ignoring the real problem would be irresponsible, IMHO. Like recommending aspirin for a headache....caused by a brain tumor.

My earlier response was intended to "poke" fmpro a little, and perhaps cause him to step back and think about the situation...maybe to provide a little stimulus to spread his wings, make his own decisions, leave the nest and live the life he was given.
