It's probably going to get infected sooner or later, especially with you digging. A little redness is normal as it's a foreign object in your body. I'd give it a couple of days and if it looks like it's getting worse get to a doc. Infection is nothing to mess with. If it does not get infected it will work out in time.

Hello Na11: The best thing to do is probably to see your doctor. The other thing you could try would be to apply some antibacterial ointment to a bandage & cover the injury. My experience has been that, sometimes the ointment will draw the splinter out toward the surface of the skin enough so that you can reach it with tweezers or a needle. But, don't mess around with this too much. It's better to get it taken care of than to keep digging at it yourself.

sometimes warm water soaks with epsom salts will draw out splinters---3-4x/day for 20min or so----(the salt pulls fluid...)---and covering between as Skeezyks advises.

what about drawing salve? ichthymmol cream? It is used to draw out splinters from wounds, and other wonderful things.
Here's a link of what you're looking for. I've used ichthymmol on myself for splinters that BROKE OFF halfway during extraction w/ tweezers, and went deeper into the skin. Worked like a charm: CVS Drawing Salve Ichthammol Ointment - CVS.com |

See a doctor for a splinter in your foot? Pffft. Soak your foot for 5 minutes in very warm water, get a needle you've dipped into rubbing alcohol, and dig the splinter out.

Depending on what it is and how big it is, I would seek medical attention. If it is deep enough you may need to make sure your tetanus shot is up to date.

An urgent care facility could hook it up really quickly and inexpensively, although I would exhaust all the other suggestions made above first.

Whenever I would get a splinter in my foot as a girl, I'd use a needle to tear away some of the flesh round the splinter so that it would be easier to get. I found that method to be best, as tweezers seemed to push the wood or glass further in. On the occasions I couldn't retrieve the foreign object, my father would tell me my body would eventually dispose of it on its own and whether that was true or not, I never got an infection.
Don't worry over it too much unless it causes pain, assuming it is a small bit of wood that's got itself lodged in your foot. Still, it seems best that things don't remain stuck in a person's body, so perhaps you should go to a doctor anyway. |
