Has anyone ever been called weak by your family, after they found out you suffered from mental illness? Especially if you had to be hospitalized because of it?

I've been told this by a few family members now. That I'm just weak and I need to get over it or I need to disappear. One of them in particular has added -- on top of being called weak -- that they didn't need me anymore because they are so much stronger than me. This person told me that I wasn't worth their time.
This same person, mind you, has several mental illness of her own. So, I can't tell if she meant it or if she was just...I don't know. I'll stop carrying on now.

To add to the original question: How did it make you feel and how did you respond?

leigehas, I'm so sorry to hear this. You didn't deserve these comments at all.

Unfortunately, "normal" people just don't understand what a person with depression (or any mental illness for that matter) is going through. Even with this, that comment was mean and totally uncalled for

Don't listen to these people, you're a very strong person. And the fact that you're still here, fighting, proves it.
Even so, I understand if you were hurt by those comments

Expect it... and remember who said what. A friend once described her own niece, a young adult living with her mother, as someone so "bipolar and useless" that my friend couldn't understand why "she didn't just kill herself." This taught me a lot about my friend, who had already distinguished herself by asking why we spent to have our dog's cancerous eyes removed to save his life instead of just having him put down. I will never fully trust her. My brother has said many cruel things, and I remember all of them. Expect it.
