Do any of you have an extremely sick, morbid twisted sense of humor?

Does it cause some of your therapists to give you strange looks and be like "What the hell?"

Some people say that it's unhealthy to have gallows humor. Some say that it's just a way to cope.

What do you all think?

Can you give us an example? I've no idea of what you are refering to.

Like really morbid jokes.

Like one time I said "I play the Sims so I don't kill myself."

My husband said "You don't really mean that do you?"

I said "Eh. I'm not going to kill myself. It would probably be a bummer to find my bloated self hanging from the loft."

Or when my father and I would look through the obits "Did you find your obit? No? Phew!"

Yeah I have that kind of humor at times. I don't take anything that seriously so I'll make these jokes all nonchalantly and people either get it or they are like wtf...

I have a pretty dark sense of humor but don't share it with anybody other than people I know are the same.

A few years ago I almost died from the flu. At the hospital(once I was lucid) they explained everything about how close I'd come. I lost it laughing and when they looked horrified I said "I've tried pills, walked into traffic and various other things and the closest I've come to dying is an itty bitty bug that I can't see." They almost ordered a psych hold but to me it's still the funniest thing in the world. SO I totally get the gallows sense of humor.

I'll make jokes about this kind of stuff some times. For me, it doesn't seem like dark humor because it's normal.

I have a really dark sense of humour. I share this with many people i have been IP with. Our humour always kept me going on the ward. It's so much better to laugh about all this **** than cry...

That reminds me, a couple times I saw other sites recommend and praise Hyperbole and Half's posts about depression (which you should totally read if you haven't), but in addition to being described as funny and informative, it was also called things like "disturbing" or "uncomfortable."

But my feelings about it were more like, "Hahahah it's funny because it's true!!! "

It's actually a family trait. We get funny looks at the funeral home, for instance.

I spent almost 4 months in a rehabilitation facility (for physical issues, not addiction). Gallows humor was what got us (me+other patients) through the days and the pain.

I would have probably done the same thing.

Yes, very dark and usually a bit gruesome. It's definitely genetic with me, my dad and his side of the family are the only ones I've found that can appreciate it.

I think I was born with a gallows humor.

I remember in first grade. It was raining outside, so we didn't go outside for recess. The teacher would give us prompts to draw from. For some reason, she gave a group of us girls a prompt about a dream wedding. (for FIRST GRADERS). Everyone drew their happy wedding. I drew a funeral scene. That got me sent to the school psychologist and a nick name of "Wednesday Addams"
