Does getting a night time job while I'm in college sound like a horrible idea? I will need the money next year to pay for the college and working at nights seem like the only way I'll be able to get enough money... Are classes and studying overwhelming in college too? I feel like I could handle it but idk I don't want to fail college.

Lots of people work during college. Whether or not it will be overwhelming varies from person to person. Maybe you can do limited hours while school is in session and full time on breaks. I personally didn't. It was tough financially, but my gpa was great and I think I got more out of it.

It's certainly not for everyone, but my grandfather in his 20s held multiple jobs, took nighttime classes, and raised a family of five. So it is indeed possible!

I'm about to take on a part time job and FT school which I have never done before. I'm very nervous, but many college students do this so I'm sure it's not as bad as I think it is.

While it's not for everyone, some are able to juggle full time work and school. My son will be graduating this May after 7years with his second degree and no debt. It was very hard work. He sacrificed his social life to do it. But in the end, it worked for him, and he has his choice of job offers upon graduation.

Hi,

I don't think that working while taking a full load of college courses is generally a bad idea, but I wouldn't recommend working so many hours as a full-time student that you'll end up becoming overwhelmed and getting less sleep than you need over an extended period of time. That's basically what I did during one of my years at college, and I think that it affected my mental health in a bad way, even into the long run. Having said this, working while taking a full load of college courses didn't have any significant negative effects on my mental well-being until I started working way too many hours. So, I think that working at night while studying full time would be a worthwhile option to consider, but if you end up doing this, I'd recommend paying attention to your stress level and to the extent to which you might end up cutting back on sleep because of the amount of time that you'll need to commit to both school and work. If you find yourself feeling too stressed and not getting the sleep that you need, then you might find working a limited number of hours to be best for you. But regardless as to what you might end up doing as far as working while going to college is concerned, I wish you luck with making a decision.

Start with no more than 12 hours of classes for a semester and see how it goes. If that is manageable, then you'll have a better idea of whether you might be able to handle 15. Twelve is a fairly light class load but still considered full time.

What was successful for my son was that he had an early morning job (5am -9am). This allowed him to study during the afternoons. He earned extra money coaching in the early evenings.

His morning job was looking after the property of several businesses. He gathered garbage in the spring to fall and shovelled sidewalks in the winter. Hard work but it paid $25/hr.

The thing to do is keep in mind the volume of studying and homework involved. This will depend to a great extent on your choice of studies. For example the liberal arts (ex history, philosophy) and the social sciences (psychology, sociology) require an extraordinary amount of reading. This will make working evenings near impossible. On the other hand, sciences will require lab work which might make scheduling evening work a little easier. And then of course, it depends on the student and commitment involved.

Yes, same here. The band is pretty local to me. They are from Ithaca, NY if I remember correctly.
