My old therapist used to say stuff to me then the next week denied she said anything of the sort. One of our conversations went like this.
Me: last week you said you ate fish tacos one time at a restaurant. Her: I never said that. I've never in my life had fish tacos. Pause Me: why would I make something like that up? She didn't say anything else, but she got a scared/disturbed look on her face. Because, why would I make that up? She never went into detail, but I think her mother had dementia. She did/said a lot of similar things. Has this happened to anyone else? Where your therapist said something then denied it the next time you saw him/her? |

Quote:
another suggestion take someone to your sessions with you who can be there as an observer/ emotional support person for you but not participate in your sessions as someone doing the talking. under ADA laws any time anyone with a mental or physically challenged person wants a third person present or record their meetings and sessions the agencies have to allow it. |

Well, it could be transference. Where something of significance comes up from the past, a trigger or reminder of something that happened and gets put into the here-and-now. Transference can happen to client or therapist. I'm not sure what significance fish tacos holds for you or her though? Either that is important to you or she really did forget the fish taco conversation because it wasn't that important to remember. If your therapist was forgetting vital information that is needed for your treatment, then yes that would be worrying.

It just seemed kind of weird to me. Her facial expressions were interesting. I think my question must of been relevant to something.
One thing that still had me upset, Is that one time she offered to put me on the 4 year waiting list for transitional apartments. I said I'd think about it. A couple weeks later, I asked her and she refused to put me on the waiting list. She didn't give me an answer she just said no. The waiting list was 4 years, and I could of had an apartment by now. She'd also say she could give me recommendations for doctors that accept my insurance and then a few weeks deny me the information. She was just weird. I was just trying to get a conversation going with the people on PF. Not trying to complain. Just trying to hear other people's experiences. |

That's really bizarre. I had a good friend who would do that to me for whatever reason. Made me think I was going mad. Was your therapist old enough to possibly have dementia?

I have a much better therapist. An incident happened today with my current therapist that went like this:
Me: "I'm leaving now." (I was in group during lunch and her office is in the next room.) Her: "why?" I was kind of confused by her question, because we can leave group and go home whenever we want to and there usually are no questions asked. Me: "because I have stuff to do." Her: " oh, ok" I felt bad for being sort of standoffish so I went up to her door and said this Me: "sorry that was kind of rude for me to say that." Her: "I don't even know why I asked that. It's none of my business why you are leaving. Your response was appropriate." She actually said she was in the wrong. The old therapist would of denied she did something wrong. I felt like I should have told someone I was leaving, and she was just sitting at her desk. We just have a good relationship and communicate well. I really should just get over the old therapist. |

This has happened to me too. I think they just say no automatically to everything, unless they very clearly remember the conversation.
Also, its not really a conversation, even tho it superficially looks like one. Its usually therapy, altho the OP's are different. They are listening, looking at us, trying to FEEEEEEL what we are saying - its kinda like they are in a different dimension? The t dimension. |

Therapy can be very dangerous... I would like to become one just to see how it works behing closed doors. It makes me sad to think of therapy as a hollow artificial place...
