I have been reading a lot about neuroscience and regularly listening to prominent podcasts concerning mental health and neuroscience. The common theme is the value of ‘brain mapping’ and the fact the brain is ‘plastic’ and ‘soft wired’ (vs the long held incorrect belief that the brain is hard wired and cannot be trained to think differently). And brain mapping is a key player in the rewiring process.
Has anyone tried brain mapping? I have only read very positive experiences about it. Frankly my only concern is that the insurance wouldn’t cover it.
Thank you in advance.

if you mean has anyone had an MRI (brain scan) that tells their doctors which parts of their brain is responding to looking at pictures, lights, smells, when they are asked to touch something.... the answer is yes I have had to have MRI's and other brain scans as part of my being diagnosed with MS (multiple Sclerosis - a neurological/physical health problem) what this did for my doctors was told them which parts of my brains functions were being affected by my having ms. example my speech is mildly affected, my motor skills are mildly affected, eye sight and reaction time is affected....

since 2013 here where I am (NY) brain scans (brain mapping ) is used to rule out mental disorders, if the problem is being caused by something physical they know its not a mental disorder problem in me.

Sounds interesting. I would do it if I could. I bet insurance wouldn’t pay though unless I had a medical reason for it.

No
Unfortunately the insurance doesn’t pay for it.
From what I understand, brain mapping is more of an interactive process during which you get feedback from the computer as you go through various activities. I am actually reading more about it on the MIT site, now. The neuroscientists are heavily engaged in bringing this treatment into the health care system yet the pharmaceutical companies are lobbying against it.

insurance did pay for mine. it all depends upon ones own insurance package they have chosen and what the doctors are calling it. if the brain mapping is done not by being called a study, but rather the testing that is being done.... MRI, EEG, PET, CT, FMRI, MRA.... well you get the point. if the doctor orders the tests as tests not as a "study" or "Research" insurance plans do cover it. just make sure when you do the mapping process, your doctor lists the tests being done as tests for your mental or medical problems.

I have had an MRI.
I have MS as well. I just never heard it called brain mapping. I have had full body MRIs several times. It is very expensive and insurance covers it, as needed.

What kind of a doctor would order it? My HMO does everything as a referral.
