I've always wondered, what causes us, anyone for that matter, to get emotional over certain kinds of music? There are certain kinds of music, depending on what mood I am in, that makes me feel emotional. Most of the songs that make me feel that way at times are slower songs and worship songs. If I am in a good mood, they have little effect on me and I will just appreciate the song for what it is and love it as always. But if I am feeling depressed or upset about something, I can listen to the same songs I've heard thousands of times before and it can make me emotional.

Has anyone have this happen? What causes us to get emotional over songs, especially songs that only make us emotional sometimes and other times, nothing at all? What kinds of songs make you emotional the most, whether it is all the time or only sometimes? I just found this to be an interesting topic and wanted to hear what everyone had to say about it. Music can be very powerful and can sometimes help us release our emotions at times, but I've wondered how that can only happen sometimes and other times it doesn't.

Sometimes rock energizes me while roll on 18 wheeler by Alabama will bring me to tears. I think if you can relate to a song you will have an emotional reaction to it.

Yeah that makes sense.

I love music and always have. Basically anyone who has ever meant anything to me has a song that I associate with them. Songs remind me of memories. Sometimes happy. Often sad. Sometimes I will sit and listen to the songs that make me cry just to get a good cry out.

Yes, you are absolutely right. I also listen to songs that remind me of the past. For example, I used to be very involved in a Christian worship club during college and we would always have worship songs. Now at times when I hear them, they make me emotional since it is a reminder of past memories. Same for hearing songs from church services since I helped out a lot there as well. Same for listening to music that reminds me of people and memories with them and of them in the past. Sometimes I can listen without getting emotional but other times I do. Basically it can make me feel extremely nostalgic. I totally agree with you. Songs I relate to can also have the same effect at times too.

My taste in music changes with my mood. If I am happy, I will listen to dance music and start dancing. If I am angry, I will listen to death rock. If I am sad, I will listen to depressing music.

I enjoy listening to music that matches my mood. It's a good way to get out of my own head.

There have been times in my life that certain music has affected me deeply - often bringing me to melancholy and tears. Some of this music is incident related in that the music brings about strong memories of specific events. Music is linked to emotional memory for me.

Incidentally there is music (country) that brings about a strong and unpleasant reaction of revulsion. I physically get ill. I can't help it but I at times have had to excuse myself in order to be sick. While some of this no doubt is caused by the manner in which I hear some of it too is linked to negative emotional memory associated with this music making it unbearably awful.

Music can be amazingly powerful and healing. My husband is grieving the loss of his mother and he uses music as a healing tool. It is very powerful to watch.

The major keys are basically happier than the minor keys in music. A song written in the minor key could cause sadness. as for memories and incidents of crying, that was what the point was of the music.

Yeah.. I agree that music is the key to the happiest environment. Some songs make me cry because the mood of the music is connected with my life.

I think that when you're feeling down and depressed that comforting music speaks to your heart. It's like Jesus coming to offer comforting words and putting his arm around you. At least with gospel music but, there are some rock songs that do this for me too and I cry a little because I know that he's there for me and cares. Late 80s music is emotional for me too but, it's more about wanting to go back to that time than anything else.

Beautiful music coupled with a beautiful voice can bring me to tears. If the lyrics of a song make me think of something I wish I had or a negative memory, I'll start to cry. Just cried yesterday while listening to a song, in fact. It was overwhelmingly beautiful in a way that somewhat saddened me. I'm a pretty sensitive person in general though, so I'm not surprised music has such a deep emotional effect on me.

Same here. It is the samw way with me too. Also it depends on my mood too. If I am in a good mood, I can listen to a song without getting emotional and just love the song for what it is but if I feel sad, the same song can make me cry. And just how it sounds and how it is sung can also bring on emotions too like you mentioned.
