Hey Everybody
i am confused if this considered as xenophobia. The question is let consider if you are in the class. and the education language is English in that class which is your mother language also, but there is two foreigners among you . their English is not so good, they can speak English but they feel more comfortable and can explain themselves better in their mother language, they are sitting behind you , they talk with each other in their own language. or one asked the other "what time is it" or "what is the next class" or "give me the pen" or something like that using own language / how would you feel? Would that be considered Rude? Do they have to speak English in that case? |

They should speak whatever language they are comfortable with. Wouldn't you want to be able to do the same? Asking them to speak English, when they are only talking to each other would be rude.

What you are describing has absolutely nothing to do with xenophobia.
What you are describing is not even mildly rude. It is an average human behavior. People usually feel more comfortable speaking in their own language, for very obvious reasons.

This isn't xenophobia. You described them as foreigners, which is obvious to state that they are to new to your place and haven't made any friends. So the only support they have is that of each other. When they will eventually try to talk to people, then they will talk to you as well. Till then let them talk in their particular language.

I think they should be able to speak whatever language they are comfortable using, if they are just speaking to each other. It is not rude in the least.

I don't find it rude. It can come accross as cliquey. Xenophobia, to me, would be intense to the point of not having any willingness to behave cordially. I don't feel it's necessary that they only speak english to each other.
Disclaimer, I live in an area that english only is minority. I can't count the number of times I've been spoken to in a different language, until it was realized that my second language skills are minimal at best. It really hasn't been too much of an issue nor hinderance. |
