I tried multiple types of antidepressants, multiple anticonvulsants, a stimulant, an antipsycotic ect. All I got were really bad side effects from the anti-d and the antipsycotic med. The rest didnt cause that bad of side effects but just didn't do anything.
But here's the thing, my doctor doesn't believe me. She just thinks because I'm too pessimistic, it is my fault the medication isn't working. I've already debunked that by telling her that's not quite the case and I was really exited about the adderall, wellbutrin and the strattera because I thought adhd was the root cause. But after taking them for more than a month (as percribed) they just didnt do anything. The adderall did relax me a little bit but was still too subtle to notice any real improvement. She said that she's never come a cross someone so resistant to meds so it has to be my pessimism and also me not taking pills accordingly. I told her I only stopped a med if it gave me severe side effects and thats only happened to 3 of my meds. So thats not a good argument either, I've almost always taken pills as perscribed. Anyway you can imagine the frustration and annoyance I may feel from encountering such ignorance. But is it really that uncommon for meds to just not work? Either way I'm going to try ketamine soon and I hope that'll work. I've also been perscribed depakote today, so I'll be taking it for the next 2 weeks(250 3 times a day) which should be more than enough for it to work. I wonder if my doctor would still be saying it's my fault for it not working if it doesn't work? But anyway sorry for the rant, I just felt like getting this off my chest. |

Hi Andy, I can definitely understand your frustration. First, you want to get better, you are following your doctor's orders and prescriptions, and then your doctor says those things to you. I would be frustrated as all hell.
I have a few things to say about this. 1.) have you thought of switching doctors? It sounds like you don't particularly care for the one you are seeing. 2.) I'm not sure what your diagnosis is, but have you incorporated other therapeutic activities into your routine besides meds? Socializing / making friends, eating healthy, exercising, etc? These are things that can make us naturally feel better. 3.) Are you in therapy? I ask because you do sound exasperated and it might help to a.) have someone to talk to about it, and b.) there are other ways to tackle the issue of mental health issues and therapy can help with that. Sorry you're struggling. ![]() |

1. I have, and I need to ask my therapist about that. 2. I have tried exercise, being in nature but I constantly feel fatigued and there's constantly feels like what I usually describe as constantly having a million thoughts racing in my head, and it never goes away. And my cognition has suffered so much from this as I constantly feel some level of dissociation and slowed cognitive abilities. 3. Yes. And yeah Im counting the days to see him lol. Thanks again for the reply. |

A lot of people on PC have their med cocktail listed in their signature. Some also have their previous meds listed. There are really people who've tried 12 or 15 meds and are now on a cocktail that works.

Over the years, I've been on 37 different meds and med combos. Some did absolutely nothing. Others worked for 2-3 months. I've even tried ECT without responding. So it is possible that the meds you've tried weren't the right ones for you. Getting a second opinion would be something to think about.

I never did find meds tgat didn't have horrible side effects. My pdoc's slwaus put me in the hospital for med changes because reactions could be so bad. I got to the point & actually questioned the pdocs whether situational major depression & snxiety could be treated with meds because they didn't change the situation. Ended up much beyter off without meds for me personally.
Interesting because I left the bad marriage tgat no one even accounted as part of the problem & I have almost no deoression except what is normal in nirmal situations & same with anxiety. There is hope.
