I would really, really like to seek a therapist, however I'm under 18 and I live with my parents. I don't feel like my parents (mainly my mom) would really believe me if I told them needed help. My plan is to go to a normal doctor and ask them to tell my parents I need a therapist. Is that dumb? I already have something going on with my eye and I've asked to see a doctor about it, but I was told to wait a few days too see if it clears up. Is it wrong of me to mess with it to make it worse so I can see a doctor? And if I do make it to a doctor would they even be able to help me?

Welcome to PC cameroni.
Are you still in school? Could you talk to the school counselor there? Please dont try to make your eye worse. Doing this could have long standing damage to your eye sight in the long run? Hope you can find some support and a listening ear here. ![]() |

I am in school and we have counselors but they aren't really accesible. To see one you have to make an appointment and you don't have a lot of time to talk with them, but theyre still my plan B if this doesn't work.
If I manage to make it to the doctor without messing with my eye more, do you think they could help me with this? I really hate going to the doctors and it would suck if I went and they couldn't even help lol. |

I agree with possum. School counselor is a great place to start. Or even get in with regular doc for a referral but definitely don’t hurt yourself to get there. You can still see your primary dr. for lots of other reasons. Xo

Going to your family doctor is great also set up a appointment with your school counsellor and ask them if they can refere you to a therapist and talk to your parents for you. Some schools will have a therapist come in to see you if you request and they see you are in need of one. Also some places do not require you to have parents permission, also you can call the kids help line. Good luck to you and it takes courage to ask for help. I hope your parents will be a support in you getting therapy. Keep posting here its a great place to recieve support here

Its really hard to find a way to get therapy without telling your parents, but i understand sometimes it feels imposible to talk, so i hope the post worked for you because they are correct, either way: the doctor can get you to a psychologist if you ask to, or you can make an apointment at your school counselor, so get well and i hope you get therapy and feel better

School guidance counselors are generally not as skilled as therapists.
Yes, see your primary care doctor and ask for help in getting to see a therapist. Please let us know how this has worked out? ![]() WC

Hi. Good of you to reach out.
I my experience a guidance counsellor is a very good source of help. While their training and personal resources can be limited they should be able to guide and direct you to those that do have the time and resources to aid you. Most school boards have psychologists or psychologists on retainer. A guidance counsellor should be able to bring your parents into the discussion, acting as an advocate for yourself and liasing between you and them as necessary. The guidance counsellors that I have encountered can help set up appointments for yourself. I want you to realise that you are well of the age that you are in control of your own medical choices. You need not have anyone's permission to get some help. I didn't catch if you were high school or college. I am unsure about your area but here your student fees pay for and include a healthcare plan. Look into this. I hope this might help. |

Hi, Cameroni,
I'm really glad you came to this place--and I agree you have a lot of self-awareness (that's a good thing!) I found a place on the internet called Polaris counseling....and.... According to them, if you are above the age of 12 you can have up to 5 sessions without parent consent--and parents will not be informed about your visits unless they think you are in danger or someone else is in danger. Yeah, don't make your eye worse to get in to see the doctor--as that could result in injury. If you have to make up an ailment to get in to see him. I hope the above site helps. Come back and tell us how you are, okay? We are all rooting for you! SeekerSeeking |
