I have bipolar disorder as my primary diagnosis but have been stable for a long time. However i find im still impulsive and i can not stick to a job i get bored and lack motivation. I have tried so many different jobs some which i have been so excited about. I then feel bad when i leave. I am not lazy and just want to work. I did have a diagnosis of adhd as well and wondered if this was the culprit or is it just me? The diagnosis was removed when i changed psychiatrist. I just don't know what to do anymore!

Sounds very much like the adhd people I know. Therapy would know the best skills that could help. MINDFULNESS comes to mind as skill that might help.....it takes emotional mind with the logical mind & comes up with the best action in response to the situation.
Just a thought

This really speaks to me. I am bipolar too and have had 43 jobs since the age of 12 (I am 51) now.
My problem is connected to impulsivity too, however it is not so much based in boredom as it is anxiety. I fear not being worthy enough, feeling under pressure to produce and perform, and worry I am not doing a good enough job. The anxiety spirals out of control to the point I make myself physically sick and can't sleep. So I choose the Flight option and sabotage myself by quitting and moving on. The ironic thing is that I in fact do have a very high track record and do the jobs well enough to be rapidly promoted (which only increases the anxiety). |

I have changed careers three times. The first career I quit because I was bored and unchallenged. The second career I quit because I was not fit to do it. The third career, which I am doing now, I like doing. I think if I had stuck to the first career and second career, I would be miserable and unhappy. Now, I am happy. I have a rather laid-back job teaching English. I like it a lot. However, the demand for this field is decreasing. Thus, I might face reality sooner rather than later and change careers again to translation and interpreting with some teaching as a side job. I don't see anything wrong with changing jobs or careers. However, if you become bored easily and unmotivated with each one, there may be an underlying problem that needs to be addressed. I like working to a certain extent. It keeps me busy and focused. I think if I were doing a job that I am not interested in doing and find boring, then I would also quit and find another job that I like to do. May be, you have not found what you truly want to do because you don't like what you are doing and may be don't find the work challenging enough. I think once you find a job that suits your character, you won't have such problems anymore.

I have experienced the same in recent years. Now, my doc thinks I am bipolar. They started me on antidepressant with initial diagnosis of MDD associated with GAD. That made things worse, and they took me off the anti-depressant, and that was worse. Now I start job number 7 (in 4 years) on Monday, so the doc said I was in mixed state with mania induced from taking the antidepressant, which is now associated with latent bi-polar that I had been misdiagnosed since the first MDD several years ago, and this episode just boosted it.
I am so tired of being the med guinea pig with my head being so f*d up, and now I don't know what's going to happen. I can't get stable. I am wondering if this is just a bunch of hogwash, yet I am desperate to get help. |

I’ve had 3 different jobs since 2014. I stayed at one job for a year and 3 months and the other job I stayed at for about the same time. I just get anxious after awhile. Or I don’t care. Or I start finding something wrong with the job and Or having issues with bosses.
I’m really hoping my current job will be different. |

My career lent to moving around within the career. I was an aerospace computer firmware design engineer. Companies would get military contracts & start hiring people to work on the contract. Several companies I was at for only 1 1/2 years. Another company I was there for 5 years then went to other companies then I went back when they got a follow on contract.
Every job was different so I got tons of different experiences. Never a dull moment....never had a chance to get bored because I was involved from the beginning to the final testing that the computers worked. Managed to enjoy 15 years of that career before aerospace industry crashed in So. Calif.

Though I'm 8 years in with my employer, I've moved around within the department 4 times. Each was for more money. I hear the boredom factor very much and I don't have bipolar disorder. Some jobs do plateau.
