Need your opinions

If you went to work knowing that one day soon you may end up needing inpatient in a mental hospital, so you asked your boss what if any repercussions there would be from that and your boss replied, "none, I just prefer you do it when you don't have to work", what would you take that to mean?

Do you know him well?
I would not even ask him. If you need to go inpatient...that's what you need to do. I don't think he can do anything about it one way or the other. If you call in sick you need not tell him anything except your calling in. He may require a back to work note, but that's about all that can happen. If you need it apply for FMLA through tour HR.

Do you work full time? When do you "don't have to work"?

I would take it to mean take a medical leave of absence & do it then unless you actually have scheduled time off that doesn't impact your work schedule

I work full time hours but am considered (and officially listed as) a part time employee, so I get no sick days or vacation days... As far as when do I not have to work .. that varies, but recently I never have more than two days off in a row, the mental health hospital here generally keeps you at least three days if you are inpatient..hence my confusion

That makes no sense either .. you interpret what's said here without all those things .. but okay then 🤷

I dont think a random boss would know that IP is three days compared to your two days off. So i think hes just saying, do it on your days off.

If you were full time, you could file for FLMA. How you can be considered full time yet part time screams, I wouldnt trust your boss. Just might need an excuse to get rid of you? Right to work state? Not enough information to make a solid answer.

I am considered part time but working full time hours. He has the hours to give me but cannot give me the full time status bc to do so I would need to be promoted and to be promoted I have to be able to legally drive by myself. Since I have seizures, that's not an option .. so, he cannot promote me to a position that is full time status, but can give me the hours, so that's what he does.

If you are in the states you should accumulate sick days by law even if you work part time, I believe it’s one hour for each 35 hours so you should have a full day after 2 months or so. Is it a lot? No. But it has to be provided to you. Well he can’t demand you’ll go inpatient when you are off work. Ideally we’d do major medical things when we are off but things happen when they happen

I am in Tennessee and work for a Dollar General .. I will need to check on what you said bc I have worked there almost 2 years now (will be 2 years in October). Thanks

Tennessee doesnt have such a law, per google.

Oh never mind. I see unaluna said TN doesn’t have it. I thought it was a federal law. It’s a law in my state only. Actually it’s an hour for every 30.

according to your post you asked him in a way that means you know you are goning to need to go to the hospital -

from your post

in that context it means you do have a choice.

so to me the employer was saying since you know you will need to be hospitalized, choose to do that during your non work days.

the pro's of knowing you need inpatient care is that you can plan ahead of time -

you can go in voluntary status instead of involuntary which means you may be able to take some personal items with you like clothes, cell phone or lap top, somethnig to do when not in the inpatient groups and therapy.

and on top of that knowing you will soon need inpatient care you can plan for going on your days off which saves work related paperwork, possible trouble in finding someone to take over your job position while you are gone, possible loss of income/ pay check.

I think your employer gave you some good advice. I myself have felt when I was spiraling downhill and found that same advice from my employers to be helpful. I chose when to go inpatient during my off work hours and it saved me a paycheck, and saved my employer from having to assign someone else to work by position while I was gone. they already had me on the schedule of not working those days anyway lol

and quite frankly I got more out of voluntary hospitalizations then I did involuntary against my will hospitalizations lol

if you know you may soon need to go impatient now is the time to start planning the when where how why and what you want to take with you.

Isn't it illegal for there to be any repercussions from having to go IP. Does he think you can just choose A day? It doesn't work like that. I wouldn't worry about what he said. If you need IP he can't do anything about it.

a bit of information may help -

here in the USA we have two different things -

involuntary in patient

thats when people dont have a choice

voluntary inpatient

thats when people know they may need some help soon or right away. they dont want to wait for the crash and burn, hit rock bottom.

sometimes people know when they are so depressed or having a hard time with their mental illnesses that they know they may need to go into the hospital soon.

there are alot of people who choose to go to their doctors and say - this is happening and I need to go into the hospital. or they go to an ER and ask to speak to the ER on call psychiatrist.

then they talk with the doctor or psychiatrist and then choose to be put in the hospital for 2 or three days sometimes longer depending upon whats going on.

I have chosen to enter the hospital when I was feeling suicidal, self injuring and other issues too.

sometimes my ---- voluntary inpatient status --- lasted just 2 or three days and other times it lasted for 2 weeks.

there are lots of people who know when they may need to go inpatient soon.

they decide that based on how they are feeling.

some people like me feel making the choice to go inpatient myself when Im having suicidal, self-injury or whatever other issues is better than waiting for the crash, burn hit rock bottom.

theres lots of people in this world that pay so close attention to their moods and mental disorders that they just know some day soon they will need to go inpatient. and they choose to take that step before they hit rock bottom or before its too late.

here in the USA people can indeed choose when to enter mental health treatment facilities for treatment.

I am truly sorry you were not able to find succor here. I wish you would open your heart and try again.

I’ve never observed anyone, let alone everyone, treating you with flippancy. On a contrary, people had lots of suggestions and thoughts and took their time to reply. It’s hardly flippant attitude
