My older brother out in Calgary is carrying the olympic torch tomorrow at 3:00 pm, and I can't believe this -but he's not even excited about it at all. He's totally bored about it, and thinks it's a waste of his time. He's only getting to carry it because he's CEO of the Calgary Stampede and it's PR for the Stampede.

Me I'm jumping I'd be jumping up and down with excitement at the opportunity.

I've told him not to trip, and that I want lots of pictures.

Wow that totally cool!!! When the olympic torch came through our town Christmas Eve morning there were thousands waiting to see it. I would be so excited if I were you and thrilled if I was your brother.

That is quite an honor to run off with...lol.

(Reminds me of that episode of "King of the Hill" where Hank won the honor of running with the torch through his town. Finally allowing himself the joy of feeling 'happiness', he then falls into a puddle and extinguishes the torch. Luckily, his friend Dale, earlier used the torch to light his cigarette with, which enabled Hank to relight torch with the original fire....lol).

I can understand your excitement. YAY, brother!

I think that is really kewl!
Is he downplaying to you because that's the way he is (though saying it's dumb isn't being humble)
I hope if he really thinks it's dumb that he would let someone who would be thrilled to do it, carry it.

If he is CEO, has arrogance come into play here? My brother is a Yale professor and to hear his arrogance whenever he is around has been painstakingly difficult!

He just might be worried a protester will trip him. The further west he gets the more mixed emotions are coming out of the crowds. There is a lot of recentment here in BC about the Olympics. Many of us are enraged at the things that have gone on. I generally love to watch them but now that they are coming into my back yard and I see the consequences I'm no longer a fan.

Sorry for the rant but maybe your brother feels the same way and would prefer not to be associated. If so he sould probably hand the 'honour' off to someone else... if he can find someone. lol. When they put the call out for runners in some areas there was such little response that they had to recruit. Poverty and homelessness are just too high on some peoples agenda to get excited about these games. BC has the highest rate of poverty in all of Canada. It has steadily gone up the last few years as the government puts money into the games while taking it out of social programs. People have been kicked out of housing and even lost their jobs because of the Olympics. It is an elite event hosted on the backs of the poor. Sorry... couldn't stop myself. Will go away now.

I'd love a chance to run the torch.... hope he got more out of his turn to carry the torch than he expressed to you.

Of course, it's really sand that poverty and homelessness are so high and invading on the social programs.

I'm looking forward to watching the winter games this year.

He may not feel excited about it now, but I bet he changes his tune after carrying it! Keep us posted and let us know how everything turned out!
