I don't understand the settings. I did an online search and I still don't understand... What I want to do is remove the most moisture so do I set it at 40percent or 70 percent...

What I don't understand is if the setting is at 40% does that mean the dehumidifier takes out 40% of the moisture? And 60$ takes out 60% of the moisture? I be a confused lady here.. I don't want to remove only a little bit of moisture, I want to take all of of out........

Anyone know which setting I should use to take the MOST moisture out of room in the basement.........

if it's a dehumidifier I imagine the higher percentage would be more moisture taken out of the air. If the higher setting doesn't work then try the lower setting and see what happens.

The numbers should correspond (roughly) to the relative humidity you're aiming for. 90% would be more like a jungle, with the unit hardly running; 10%, more like a desert with the unit running almost nonstop.

As one of the online articles puts it:
Quote:
One confusing ergonomic aspect of dehumidifier controls is that you pick a higher RH [relative humidity] setting by dialing a lower number. Clockwise turns lower RH. On round thermostats and valves, higher settings give you more heat, water, and so on.
(Dehumidification, by Andrew Rudin)

The same article cautions, "... the temptation is to set it to the driest setting and then faint with the next electric bill."

Good luck experimenting, r_f.

dehumidifiers are very expensive to run. I can't imagine running one on a regular basis.

Guess that might be why our electric is a bit high. We have a small portable, 50 pints dehumidifier......Anyway we have no other choice or alternative. The basement is damp and humid...We have rented the basement out for the past several years and no one has complained.. I've been here since June of 2009 and I noticed it around October..........But then we had wall to wall carpet and two years ago we installed laminated floor that looks like hardwood... Maybe that makes a difference? I dunno, just know one can not live in the basement without a dehumidifier..Actually we need two dehumidifier or one large one....Even if no one lived in the basement, the damp, moist air would only grow more mold and mildew. Which I am thinking we already have, as I need to get that mold/mildew test from Home Depot......
