I am so upset with myself. My wife and I stopped at a book store on the way home from the mechanic and pulled into a handicap parking space because she is disabled. I forgot to hang the handicap placard on the mirror before we got out of the car and while we were in the store an officer put a $250.00 dollar ticket on our window. That just ruined my whole day. That is a lot of money these days. I will probaby get depressed over this.

I wonder if they will void the ticket when they find out that you did indeed have a handicap parking permit and just forgot to hang it?

Here in Canada if you have a dispute over a ticket - you get a summons to appear in court and explain your side. If you can do that where you live, then that's what you should do. Just explain you forgot and show them the handicap permit - you have nothing to lose by doing this. They should just let it go. Try not to worry and sorry this ruined you and your wifes day

Hi Lynn,
Yes we will ask for a hearing but heard they can be very strict. At least it will give us more time if we do need to pay. I'll tell ya I get upset very easy. Maybe this is an opportunity to learn a little self control. - Dennis

Since your wife is disabled, I bet they will be sympathetic. They're only tough on the people they sense aren't being honest. You can also explain you don't have the money and try to look pitiful lol - just kidding - trying to make you laugh

I am sure in the courts they hear all kinds of things. I just hope my wife is allowed to talk in Spanish because her English would really confuse them. She uses all the right words but the words are usually in all the wrong order. Sometimes it's hard for me to figure out what she's saying lol. - Dennis

You can contact the courts before you go and request an interpreter for you wife. They are required to provide that, Im almost certain.
Thanks for this!

At least you were legit Dennis.
They're was a man the other day at the mall who took up 4 handicap parking spots with a pickup truck the size of a army tank and he had no handicapped plates.
I hope things work out for the best, Good luck.

Hi Rainbowzz,
Yep I am sure they have plenty of interpreters. There is a large Hispanic population here in central Florida. Peace - Dennis

Wow Babysteps, that is so unreal. I wonder if that guy had to pay for all four spots. Probably did. Peace - Dennis

Thanks Byz,

Atleast this kind of violation won't make my driving points go up. If that were the case I would be extremely sad. Peace - Dennis

Denny, I'm sure the judge will be understanding in your case and will keep my fingers crossed for you. It's an honest mistake.

These are some rules I found on the Florida DMV site about disabled permits.

Here's that website, maybe it will help. Also, you could probably call them and specifically ask, rather than wait and worry in the meantime.

Hey Hippie,
I sent in the ticket this morning requesting a hearing with proof that she has a handicap placard. Win or lose I'll fight until the end. Peace-Dennis

You probably won't have any problem. This happened to my husband some years back. Once he showed he truly was handicapped and had a legal handicap placard, they dismissed the ticket. I think he still had to pay some court fees, but it wasn't nearly the full ticket.
