"I wondered what it is about vampires that makes young girls camp out all night to see them in New Moon. What is the psychological significance of vampires and why are they especially appealing to tween and teen girls?"

I KNEW it would be a Freudian approach. I just knew it. Ha! And Jung, too. Methinks Kleinian theory is relevant, too. Great article. My inner teenager is chuffed. [traumatised inner teenager, not an inner teenager who reads vampire novels --- don't give her THAT idea!!!]

I liked Anne Rice's vampires. There was something about that. I laugh at Meyer's blood drinking fairies.

Bella should be in therapy not because of some freudianism... but because of her depression, her issues with her parents (she is disrespectful brat), because of her codependence issues, because of her obsession with staying young (who throws a whinefest over being 18?), because of her abusing relationship with Sparklipants... well, that all actually goes for Meyer since Bella is her self-insert and is supposed to be a mature and wise character... and since she apparently thinks pedophilia is okay and that "hot and rich" are good personality traits.

I never got along with teenage girls when i was one, so from my own experiences I am willing to guess; they feel at home with treacherous, overly made up, bloodsucking parasitic clotheshorses who hiss at each other and can't stand up to scrutiny in broad day light? Sorry to the tons of teenage girls who don't fit that bill, I KNOW you are out there!
I just get a little catty sometimes. Huggs all!
