Since I've only lived in WI for a little more than a year, I'm a little confused about something... I have a probationary license? Where does it say that? I also didn't leave with a real ID when I brought in my old license from my previous state -- I left with a paper thing, that was not a valid ID (ie, I couldn't use it to buy liquor, technically, though the waitress didn't care...) and was mailed my actual ID a week or so later. Same with my fiance and when he changed his license. I actually DID leave with the plates in hand, though, when I changed my plates over.

Also, I'd like to know what good ol' Scott Walker does for you after this whole ordeal...

I've never been to a 'pleasant' D.M.V office.Or a pleasant government office for that matter. They just know they have the drivers seat, and half the time their wk environment and load is overbearing. But,I'd nearly swear that the criteria for hiring is that you have to be an *****.

A probationary is different from a "regular" one only by its expiration date. The first one you get will expire in 3 years. A regular one is good for either 8 or 10 years. I have never heard of a DMV in the state not giving you the regular one immediately. Even when we first moved here I walked out with an actual license. Perhaps something has changed for new residents since 9/11?
