IDK if i want to get one or the other just yet.. but-- i thought maybe I would ask... Nook or Kindle? Of course I am sure Ipad would be the number 1 --- but idk if i want a carrier charge and stuff-- or is that just for the Iphone to have service with carrier? any who I thought I would ask-- just wondering what you all thought I like the idea of being able to have books with me that I want to read in one thing--- it is a nice idea.... i need to read more any ways------ ![]() but I am still not sure-- i don't like to blow a lot (yes 100-200 is a lot for me) on devices that they are just going to upgrade in a year or two due to bugs in the first version any who.. yeah just a ponder... ![]()

iPads can be Wi/Fi only, but they still start at $400... I got my wife a Kindle Fire last Christmas (She never expressed an interest in an ebook) and she loves it. Plus I have Amazon Prime, so any music or movies I buy can be streamed to the Kindle Fire
![]() If you watch the Amazon site, you could find a deal on a refurbished one like I did $139, which is why I gambled on her liking it. Refurbished ones are usually $169 |

I had a Kindle ("had" because I had to sell it to pay bills), and I LOVED it! I want another one, some day when we can afford it. My husband had one too, and he also loved his. They have a HUGE selection of free books on Amazon.
You can get a Kindle on Craigslist for around $75 now. (Are you in the US?) Just make sure you get the 3G with WiFi, it makes transferring books from Amazon to your Kindle a cinch. My husband accidently bought the older one for himself, so he always had to hook it up to the computer, and the whole process was kind of a pain. With the newer one all you do is click "Transfer to my Kindle" on Amazon and voila, there it is. Also, I loved the screen, you can still see everything crystal clear in full sun light. It's awesome. And the battery life is amazing too. I don't know anything about the Nook, sorry, no help there.

Neither - I will always take a printed book over an electronic device any day! As an avid collector of print encyclopedias, atlases, and gazetteers, I couldn't handle using an LCD screen to read. Moreover, if I was to spend like $400 on an iPad or whatnot, I wouldn't be carrying it would be wherever I go to read, unlike the $2.49 book I am reading now. Furthermore, Kindles, iPads, etc. literally never have the books I want to read, and I have issues with my eyes that makes looking at electronic devices and being in lit rooms strenuous. When I can afford to I'll be wearing prescription sunglasses during almost all waking hours.

Hey, Beauflow!
I have owned an Ipad, and I liked it, but it felt a bit big to me. That, because if you are getting it to read books, it can feel a bit heavy after a while. I liked it for the graphics, and I used it with the Wifi in my house. I sold it to my sister, and then I bought a Kindle Fire. I also have an older model Kindle for just reading, which is nice because it has what's called "text to voice" on most books, and allows you to hear the book. This is not an option on the Kindle Fire. But with the Fire, you can play games, watch videos (Netflix or Amazon movies), which works fine. I suspect the Nook will do much the same, but I've never used one. |

oh I can understand an actual physical book being much better-- after all when I have an article that i find on the internet that i want to read, i usually print it out to have it physically in my hands---
But idk, sometimes I like this idea with all books in one thing-- so if I take one book with me, and decide later in a few hours- i'd rather read something else, (which sadly I am one of those that switch gears often), then I don't have to be like eh with the one book, and have the option for another. I also like the idea of saving some trees ![]() But thanks for replies-- something to think on.. ![]() I did not think of books, that are not available on the devices.. that maybe a problem for some...

Indeed much of what I read isn't popular enough to be available digitally. Few others have heard of the books I like to read. (That's true about all things I like.)

Well, yes, sometimes I AM frustrated that the book I want to read is not available on the Kindle. There are other sources, however, available to ereaders for free books as well. Having now owned an ereader for several years now, I can tell you my personal opinion is that it is much more convenient and less cumbersome than the physical book. I also like having my "library" available all on the the e device.

I would get the Kindle. I have one and really really like it. For some reason I read more using the Kindle than a print copy.

I love my kindle...i'm on my third as I somehow keep cracking the screens on them.
The E-ink, not the kindle fire takes about an hour to get used to versus paper books. I love the experience of a real book too, but was running out of room for them. Don't think I'd like the Fire. I don't think it would feel like a book for me. Love being able to browse, read reviews, purchase, and receive in about a minute. The base model with wifi only is $79. Many free and cheap books available. |

FallingRocks, I agree with you. I have no desire to get a Fire either. To me it just seems more like an iPad or something like that.
I love the simplicity of the regular Kindle. I didn't have any problems getting used to the E ink either. I found it very easy to read, easier than a regular book. I grew up surrounded by librarians, I was raised with a love for books, I was raised to respect books. When I was around 10, I helped my godmother restore an ancient library at a castle, with books bound in pigskin, from the 1400's, things like that. It was amazing. It was one of the best experiences of my life. I will never forget it. The huge shelves, the feel of the old books, the pigskin, the old pages, the smell of the whole place. For me, it was an adventure. For that reason, I resisted the Kindle for a long time. Eventually I cracked. And I found I loved it. The small size, the selection of books always by my side, the option to try out all kinds of books for free, without knowing if I would like them, but not having to worry about spending money on them. Being able to get new books even when flat broke. I'm passing on the love for books to my children. I always make sure they have plenty of books and that they read them too (I have to read to the little one, he can't read yet). And I make sure that they treat them right. Books are not to be thrown on the floor, tore up, colored in, anything like that. Books are to be respected. But I still want another Kindle. ![]()
