.. since so many are using phones for computers these days.

Texting shortcuts are bad enough in themselves.

When someone uses a phone, the syntax is briefer and less interesting, the errors are blatant and take away from the email or post. When I sense and auto-correction inaccuracy, I generally just skip the email/post.

I'm hearing impaired, so I was quite excited when email became a common way of communicating. It felt so good to have a more level 'playing field' for communication. Now, it's disappointing and not so exciting or useful, even though I do still appreciate having it available.

Doesn't matter if I'm on the computer or usng my phone, I refuse to use abbreviations for words and if autocorrect puts in a word I didn't mean I'll back up and fix it. It's a matter of pride and personal preference. I am who I am because of my words. They are all I have that I truly own.

I am the same as Maranara, I don't use abbreviations when posting or emailing from my phone and will do my best to spot and fix errors before sending the message. Some people think it's silly not to like abbreviations but I think sometimes that people aren't putting a whole lot of effort into the conversation if they can't be bothered typing an extra few letters.

I think using abbreviations means not much over context of what is being said. I use abbreviations at times ( some people here don't say Pdoc, or T, or meds, BPD, LOL, US, PC ?? ), but I also put quite a bit of thought and sadly for readers.. length in to my posts or texts, emails. My grammar and spelling are not great. I try my best, but I might miss stuff here and there.

Autocorrect gives me american spellings, which after a long time of constantly getting corrected and errors underlined, even tho the spelling is correct in my country makes me doubt my own spelling capability. And I do get confused.

My view is a lot like Anika.'s ... the communication is what is important. I rarely text on my phone... it's a chore to type on that tiny onscreen keyboard and to go back and correct is a complete PITA.
I don't really understand the email problem.

So true my friend. What can we do? Refuse to lower your standards! Stay true! I'll stand by you and we won't be alone. The younger generations may realize the error of their ways and hopefully get squashed out of the idiocy. Nice point.

I truly detest posts in text-type/abbreviations. I simply won't read them. The number of spelling errors and grammar errors coming off of texted posts is often really high which just drives me batty. I generally just pass those posts by because it takes more effort to decipher what was written than I really want to put into it. Take the time to at least attempt correct spelling and grammar please. I don't expect perfection, but some degree of mechanical accuracy is truly appreciated.

Ok, if you are talking about this.. ... I can entirely see the point . I would probably assume English is not the first language in this case, and I would probably be wrong in a lot of cases. Text speak should probably not become a first language... no. I do almost all my posting from my phone.. no it's not so fun and is tedious. I have a five inch screen but even then I miss stuff because the font is pretty small and hard to see, for these old eyes.

Luv U's.. 4 eVazzzz!!!

What bugs me isn't that language changes over time, but that it changes even though the "change" was an incorrect spelling or usage. Two wrongs don't make a right, but in language, many wrongs make a right. If people use a slang word or a combination of words that are grammatically incorrect, sometimes it becomes accepted, and then is deemed correct. I use shortened terms and some abbreviations, but I go cross-eyed at text like the example Anika gave. I've seen lots of writing on the Internet--conversations, literature, articles/blog posts, etc.--and it saddens me how poor some people's spelling and grammar are. I'm NOT perfect when it comes to grammar; I need to bone up a bit (I have the English 101 textbook, A WRITER'S MANUAL, and it has all kinds of goodies--rules, grammar, usage, MLA standards, and more--that will help me get all smart-like again!), but it still shocks me when I see teens (whose knowledge should be fresh, since they're in the education-filled time of their lives) and adults (who should have learned a long time ago) who don't write reasonably well. I fight the urge to correct others' mistakes (sometimes I do bring it up), but it niggles at me. I know I'm not perfect, and I try not to expect it of others.
