No problem. My fav is the green mountain breakfast blend. I warn you the hot chocolate sucks. Swiss Miss is ok, but all of it is all watered down. Then again I prefer homemade cocoa

This was a great thread!! I recently got myself a teeny tiny Bialetti 1 cup espresso maker and I just love it. I have a 4-cup maker but I would force myself to drink it all, and it was too much!! The one espresso cup is just perfect. I'm downsizing, in a good way. I was never allowed for example to eat one slice of toast as a child because the toaster made 2, or else it would burn on one side. So the "needs" of the toaster were prioritized over mine. I clearly recall my rightsize gf down the block eating just half a slice of toast, and my just being amazed at that. So I'm building the perfect day for myself, without these little "it doesn't matter, just do its" replacing them with "you DO matter, here is what fits you."

"one cup" espresso maker? Is it like one of the espresso makers that make a whole drink? I'm asking because I'm used to the espresso makers that make shots, the one oz. kind and then you make your drinks with that.

I grew up with a "two cookie" rule. We were never allowed to go crazy and just grab a handful but only 2 at a time. My mother was an extremist in moderation. She would make a Hershey Chocolate bar last a week. She had her drawer she would keep her chocolate in and periodically break off a tiny piece, eat it and say "mmmm, that's enough for me." and smile at you like she was so proud of herself haha.

Am I like that? hell no. I eat a pint of friggin haagen dasz ice cream in a sitting! But then I don't do that every week or anything. Gosh I rarely get sweets to bring home... so I guess that's my moderation.

Did that create an issue with you and food? I've never understood the parents that made their kids "clean their plate." My best friend's mother was like that. When we got our first microwave, my mother bought like a 50 lb box of bacon. (At the time, a bacon sandwich on the run was the best thing since sliced bread.) Well that's a lot of bacon. We got sick of it and it eventually went bad (even though it remained in the freezer the whole time). My BFF asked if she could make herself a sandwich on night when we were on the way out of the house. Of course! She ate all but one bite and asked if I minded if she threw the rest away. What did I care? Well I made myself one the next day and it was spoiled!

oh wow. NOt me. I learned a bit of self control from her. Yeah I hated it as a kid but you get used to it and it becomes the norm. Until you marry someone that changes that o.O wait what ? yeah I said it, my ex was the opposite and it affected me. Since then I've gotten better in some ways though. Lost 30 lbs since the beginning of the separation yay me.

I totally have food issues. I'm constantly trying to feel how much is enough. Sometimes I overeat, sometimes I undereat. I don't know what to eat. My refrigerator is almost always a mess. Not only did I have to clean my plate, I couldn't say how much I wanted, and they would put what was left on my plate because nobody wanted leftovers. I know it's a shame to talk about being stuffed, but this was on top of being hungry after school, no breakfast, and a skimpy lunch. The big forced dinner made me fat which they then criticized me for. I'm sorry for whining. I just feel like I never learned to take care of myself this way. Which is nuts, because everybody says, oh you're Italian? - I bet you can really cook! Nope, not me!

S4 - it's just s little stovetop coffee maker and I drink the espresso with fake sugar. I can't keep milk or soymilk in the house cuz I'll binge on it. Again, ridiculous, I know. My "that's enough" button is permanently disabled!

I don't think you're whining at all. I cannot for the life of me understand what parents were thinking. My Grandfather was from a different generation. He was 35 years older than my grandmother. And he grew up during the depression. I HATED eating there. My Grandmother would fill your plate up and he made such an issue about eating everything on your plate. She would put everything on your plate. I have never liked stuffing, sweet potatoes or three bean salad and Grandma put it on my plate every time. I was stubborn, I took the whipping with the switch (the penalty for not cleaning your plate.) Dinner was never a nice experience there. In fact when I would get there my Grandfather would say "are you going to eat your dinner or should we cut the switch now?" I would say "that depends, are you going to put food I don't like on my plate?" I think I was 15 the last time he whipped me with a switch. After that I refused to go there for family meals. My grandmother would complain every holiday that her other daughter and family never came for holiday meals. I asked her if she thought the tradition of Grandpa lining us up to get our whipping had anything to do with it.

That's pretty brutal. I don't understand people who think like that. Did it have something to do with the Depression?

hmmm... coffee, deviant behavior, and abusive parents/grandparents. I suppose we could sit down and have some coffee and discuss the other two topics? Yeah I think I can hang with this convo
I never knew my paternal grands... they died before I was born. My older siblings told me I was lucky for that. They tell me that Sybil's mom was crude and amateurish compared to "grandma."
Maternal grands died when I was ten. I could count the words they spoke to me.
Back to coffee... just started drinking it a few months back. I like a large dollop of hazelnut creamer in mine so obviously I'm not a connoisseur (thank you spellcheck) of the stuff. And the caffeine has absolutely no effect on me at all. I honestly couldn't tell you why I drink it
And I can answer your question Pajamas... it wasn't the depression. I had a great-aunt who grew up during the Great Depression. She was sweet and gentle and considered to be mentally ill... not sure if the fact she was sweet and kind was the reason her family considered her to be crazy but obviously the thought has occurred to me.
Not sure if I kept to the spirit of this thread but I tried
Thanks for this!

wHow DID we get distracted?

George you drink the coffee for it's flavor of course! On a side note not trying to hijack the thread again, really. I'm sorry that you did not have that grandparent experience. My oldest was the 6th living generation on my side, and 4th on his father. He grew up thinking everyone over 40 was a grandparent . My great-grandparents were amazing people. I saw them every day. I remember when I was about 10 I was off playing in a tree house that I knew I was not allowed in. My mother called my GGmother to ask if I was there. When I stopped in, she asked where I was and I told her. She sent me home because my mother was looking for me. I've never been a good liar, I told my parents where I was and got grounded. My GGmother called shortly after I got home and told my mother that I had been there the whole time. I had fallen asleep on the couch so that is why she had not seen me when my mother called. All I heard from our end was "Yes, Mother, thank you Mother." When my mom got off the phone, I was no longer grounded because had I been punished, my GGmother would have known my mom knew she was lieing . My mother said "don't you ever let her know I knew she was lieing to me!" Another time I was playing in a condemed old office. It had old paperwork and I was in my glory! My mother suspected where I was, when she left to come find me my GGF said : before you punish that girl, remember it takes a thief to catch a thief. Idk why, after being raised in the household my Grandmother married the biggest jerk she could find.

Ok my son just broke the only carafe that we had for our coffee maker. I have to replace it or get something else.

The thing is I've been eyeing the keurig line of coffee makers. Since we drink a bit of coffee but dont' really drink an entire pot all at once (3 of us) ... it tends to last the whole day and we end up reheating our coffee a lot. So a single cup maker has me intrigued.

I'm wondering, I do like the coffee from Keurig but the only showstopper would be, does it end up costing more this way? Just curious of anyone's experience if you have one of these makers.

Thanks!
~S4
Mmmmmm.....Cofffeeeeeee Love my coffee! Got a single cup brewer myself....It's a saeco....they cost a fortune (between 5&7 hundred), but oh so worth it! Personally, The Keurig, I think they make money on the pods....Yeah they're a great looking machine, the latest thing always looks good, like a new car, but all those plastic pods! Think of the environment man! My machine is amazing, 3 settings for strength. 1 bag of cimo coffee beans per week $9.15 at my local IGA, worth every penny. Coffee is all I drink.

I'm researching a La Pavoni right now. Probably going to get the Europiccola (8).

Nothing fancy. I'm trying to get back to the "roots".

For $20 you can get a washable insert to brew any coffee you like in the Keurig. I actually gave up on mine because all I made was a mess. When I was visiting a friend I finally asked her how to use it. Easy peasy once you know how. Grind your own beans, fill and make a wonderful cup of coffee.

I was tempted to get the one that Penelope Cruiz advertises on TV, it looks amazing! The pods are so tiny! But I do not like all of those flavored coffees, capp, esspressos, etc so it would be a total waste of money for me.

Am late coming to the discussion. I've had Kuerig coffee. I don't like it. I like my coffee strong - as in it could hold it's shape if the cup broke strong! To me coffee made in a Kuerig is watery and weak.

Oh my Lizard. I like strong coffee as well, but I must use the largest setting on the Kuerig. The newest model might be for you. Can make a stronger coffee.

I'm pretty sure Bed Bath and Beyond has the personal K-cup filters you use your own coffee with for 10 bucks.. and you can use a coupon. I don't know if there are more expensive ones that work better though

Huh BBB is one of my favorite stores. When I looked there (because I thought mine was defective ) it was right around $20 same as everywhere else. The friend I was shopping with was sure her sister had some do it yourself Kcup system (make your own disposable ones) and I was eager to find them. But since I was taught how to use the real one, I don't need the others. They all looked the same. Except the vue ones. They've got to keep you on your toes somehow. Found a holder that I LOVED at BBB but it was for vue cups and I did not notice until I opened it.
