I'm new to PC. I've many interests and one of them is cryptography. I thought I'd post a thread on one of the codes in contemporary times that defies all attempts to decrypt it.
Maybe members here at PC can help figure it out. There is a sculpture at the CIA named KRYPTOS (Greek for "hidden") that was erected around 1990. It was designed in code using CIA coding techniques taught to the sculptor by the CIA's leading cryptographer at that time. The sculpture's code is divided into four parts. The first three parts have been decoded, but the fourth part known as K4, has still confounded the efforts of amateurs and experts alike. The first three decoded parts are below and are necessary to solve Part 4/K4. Spelling errors were added by the sculptor to intentionally defeat decryption. Part 1 - K1 Between subtle shading and the absence of light lies the nuance of iqlusion. - Keys: KRYPTOS, PALIMPSEST. Part 2 - K2 It was totally invisible. How's that possible? They used the earth's magnetic field. x The information was gathered and transmitted undergruund to an unknown location. x Does langley know about this? They should: it's buried out there somewhere. x Who knows the exact location? Only WW. This was his last message. x Thirty eight degrees fifty seven minutes six point five seconds north, seventy seven degrees eight minutes forty four seconds west. Layer two. - Keys: KRYPTOS, ABSCISSA Part 3 - K3 Slowly, desparatly slowly, the remains of passage debris that encumbered the lower part of the doorway was removed. With trembling hands I made a tiny breach in the upper left-hand corner. And then, widening the hole a little, I inserted the candle and peered in. The hot air escaping from the chamber caused the flame to flicker, but presently details of the room within emerged from the mist. x Can you see anything? q - Keys: Three columnar transpositions Part 4, known as K4 is as follows - OBKR UOXOGHULBSOLIFBBWFLRVQQPRNGKSSO TWTQSJQSSEKZZWATJKLUDIAWINFBNYP VTTMZFPKWGDKZXTJCDIGKUHUAUEKCAR Two excellent sites on this mystery - Elonka's Kryptos Page The Kryptos Project I hope I've offered something of interest to other members. I look forward to your input. PP ![]() |

Note
The solution to K3 is a quote from Howard Carter's book The Tomb of Tutankhamun. Some members may recognize it as his description of the initial opening of the antechamber of Tutankhamun's tomb in November 1922. |
