Yesterday morning according to custom I peeked out the kitchen window to check if the North Alley Bunny (NAB; a wild rabbit) was in his or her usual place. Yes, he/she was, but something was squirming underneath NAB:

The squirmer turned out to be a rather mature newborn, brave enough to follow Mommy out into the world but still eager to nurse. (This resolved the mystery of NAB's sex.)

When Mommy was far enough away not to be disturbed by my presence, I looked around the yard. Yes, I found a nest, the fourth in under two years out back within the fence.

Here's a closeup:

I think I'm running some sort of rabbit maternity ward...

Edit: I've a few photos of earlier nests in my album.

Those little babes are absolutely adorable. I always thought that rabbit nests were underground burrows. It doesn't seem safe for the babies on the ground like that but what do I know!??

Oh, how adorable! A pile of little baby NABs! (I know for sure there are four of them; maybe five?) You think you're running some sort of rabbit maternity ward??? Ahem. Rohag. You definately are! (And a rabbit daycare and a rabbit nursery school and a Youth Center for teenage rabbits and......well, you get my point. ) Thanks for posting such awesome pics! grey

So how many rows of lettuce should I plant to feed the neighborhood bun-buns?
Thanks for this!

As many as possible, I think.

This morning I checked on the nest; it was abandoned. Sometime during the night or early morning the bunlets decided that living like sardines was for the birds. They left just in time -- snow started falling before noon and it hasn't stopped since.

May they find proper shelter... ***worried***

The mother bunny would have come from a burrow. Maybe she took them back there. I doubt that they are far away.
