I was just wondering how other people were situated in this matter and was it something that they thought about.

Recently I realized no matter which way I turned my mattress I was not going to be safe from the pokes of the springs. I looked online to buy a new mattress and was shocked to see how much a basic one was. Ouch But I couldn't put buying it off any longer. I found a shop that was selling mattresses at a 40% discount. However it still isn't a cheap item.

When I thought about it and realized that my old mattress must be at least 25 years old. Its hard. There are so many differing kinds on the market. I would like a soft bed, but that would make it too warm. The memory foam ones were just too hard. Sounds like a goldilocks story without the bears.

The purchase of a mattress just wasn't on my agenda until it had to be. It isn't one of those every day items. Eventually I did find a bed. It comes in three weeks. So hopefully the three weeks will pass quickly. Despite the summer heat.
Thanks for this!

I moved into an apartment in 2012 and the mattress was new, but the mattresses at mom's house are all around 40 years old, and they are still really comfortable.

Mine is probably 15 years old. It was my parents bed and they chose a firm(as in hard as a rock) so I went out and bought a memory foam cover and that really helped for my sore joints, but even it was expensive, however, I sleep a lot better. So it's not a priority that I get a new one right now.

When my wife and I moved off our boat 6 or 7 years ago, we needed to buy a new bed... and new furniture as well, since we sold everything when we moved onto our boat 16 or 17 years ago. We shopped around and finally ended up buying a firm Tempurpedic matress. We LOVE it. It's the most comfortable bed we've ever had.

We just had to get a new one and bought a really, really cheap one at a really really cheap furniture store but I like it better than I liked the old one.

We bought a Serta iComfort last year (it was the Dream or something, I don't think they make it anymore). Best investment we ever made ... and best job of negotiating a price we ever did as well.

It is 19 years old now but from the beginning I bought a good firm mattress and have toppers on it that I change out every 8 years or so. The mattress itself is still in great shape turning it regularly. I recently just upgraded to a cool memory foam topper and am in heaven now, but is also hard to get out of bed, which on one hand, is not so helpful yet delightful.

My current mattress is five years old. The one I had as a kid is older than I am, but it's still one of the most comfortable mattresses I've tried.

I wish I had money for a new bed, my spring mattress is about 40 years old, it would be fine if it wasn't for a spring starting to poke up. When I go buy some smaller stuff I often try the beds in the bed area and they are all very uncomfortable. Right now I sleep on a foam mattress on the floor. It's OK but a little worn out so I wouldn't mind getting a better one or a double. My friend has the best bed but it cost a fortune!!!

The one I sleep on? 7 years. The one that goes on the bed I haven't put together for half a year? 6 months.

When I was a child I slept on a foam mattress it was so warm and comfortable. What ever you sleep on is okay.

I know now that I need to maybe put a small amount away each month for a mattress in the future. After I had paid a deposit I saw a bed that was $8000 way too expensive for me but I sat on the side of it and it felt like a cloud.................. sigh.

jimi you can have the honorarium for having the oldest mattress if no-one else has an older one. (Time to start saving jimi?)

elevatedsoul - palets do count.

I have no problems sleeping but wake up sore in places where the dratted springs have been pressed against me.

I got a reasonably firm mattress knowing they tend to soften up in time... I also bought a memory foam topper on Ebay at a cut rate price. If the mattress feels too soft later I can remove the topper. That was my solution when I bought my attress six months ago. Found mine at Sears for about 300 for the mattress cuz my box springs were in good shape.... so I selected mattress only as the category.
Thanks for this!

I bought my bed in 2009. Still fairly new and comfy...but it's a little too small for both me and
Hubby so I think we'll get a king size in the next few years
