People in Utah have white smiles, large families and in general friendly attitudes. It's great for depression here. Oh my gosh, tell me about it, you get a lot of sympathy in the Mormon state and the number one for volunteering. Third nicest in the attitude department after Georgia and South Carolina. It is pretty freezing here in the winter, down to -7 though and about 110 degrees in the summer. The weather is pretty extreme. Would perpetual cheerfulness get you down or keep you up? I am a cold/warm person who keeps to herself and is Buddhist. A religion I latched on to late in life. Today on the freeway I saw a homeless man and gave him a dollar. Why not? He was obviously so thankful. Not in a cheesy, Disneyland kind of way.

I can see how Utah would rank up there in niceness and volunteering. It would be good if folks in other states could follow their example!

I am currently in South Carolina and can vouch for how nice folks are here.

(By the way, what's the recipe for a non-alcoholic margarita? Thanks.)

Just curious as to why this would be? Any ideas? Like for example Ireland is generally considered friendly because Irish folk are generally very welcoming and open, so what is the population made up from or is it the weather? or food?

Newfoundlanders are considered very friendly folk too and very giving. They share easily. However, when it comes to hearing of new ways to do things, they don't want to hear it. So, there are positive things and challenges. When it comes to introducing a new business or new idea, these folk will not take easily to it so new small businesses are difficult to start here. They will give the shirt off their back for you though.

After moving there from other states that were much friendlier, I never would have guessed this about Utah. This was not my experience or other transplants that I had met experiences either in the 5 years I lived there. I have lived much friendlier places. If we had converted to the predominant religion, things would have been different and were even told so as it would make our lives easier. I had problems managing the company I was brought in to help as the church was always butting in trying to manage it for me, despite it being a secular company. You could not pay me enough to move back there despite the stunning scenery of the mountains and outdoor activities, which I love and do recommend seeing. A place to visit for me, just not to live. It just isn't for everyone.

Weather in Utah is still cold, but the high is 70 as of now.

I think a lot of this has to do with the religious aspect of it all. Living up here in Utah with the population being 60% Mormon, it's obvious to me that it has to do with spiritual beliefs.

My supervisor's from Utah, guess she's the other 40 percent because she doesn't seem religious to me. In fact, her cynicism often fits right in with our city life

My county is considered the "Stairway to heaven," because people retire here and live out the rest of their lives.

Sort of depressing....XD
