I'm sorry this happened, but its certainly no reason to put her down. Train Train and Retrain. She is just around 2 now isn't she? She is entering her rebelious stage probably. Even the most well trained dogs have set backs around this time.

Have you ever watched the Dog Whisperer? I only ask because this Friday he is going to have an episode on about a familys lab eating thier chickens. It might give you some tips. He is really amazing. He really shows that even the most agressive dog can still be rehibilitated.

I don't think it's come to putting her down yet. There's a few things that need to change. As I've already mentioned, I have to involve her in some things that give her purpose for being. I've already started taking her on much longer walks than before, trying to tire her out some. It takes out some of that agressiveness. I also have stopped cutting her any slack as far as pulling me in the direction she wants to go. She has to heel all the time we're out and she's not allowed to go to other people we meet on the walks. She has to pay attention to ME... or else she gets a good yank on her leash. She tends to ignore the more gentle yanks these days. I've already looked into a refresher course in obedience. Next, I'm ordering The Dog Whisperer CD. I really like his techniques.

If she refuses to learn, then I'll have to give it some more serious thought.

Gemstone, she's four or so. Probably in her teenage years. I didn't know dogs had a rebellious stage. Free Killer Dog! Had plenty of dogs and they did get rebellious from time to time, but I had never noticed them "going through a stage." Free Killer Dog!

I watch The Dog Whisperer as often as I can. I'll be sure to watch this coming episode and see what knowledge I can glean.

My husband has been trying some of Cesar's techniques but I think he over does it or uses some of them at the wrong times. We'll have to get on the same page so that we don't confuse the poor dog. Maybe that's part of what's wrong with her now. Free Killer Dog!

Thanks for letting me know about this coming episode! I really appreciate that! Gonna make myself a great big sign so that I don't forget. Free Killer Dog!

Thank you for not getting angry with me. I wasn't sure how long you have had her or her age. I only reviewed a few posts above mine. Obedience school may work. Good Idea!! I am glad you are going to take it to that level. I wish for the best for you and Amber Free Killer Dog!

Hey, you are in Cali right? You should call Ceaser and get on the show! Free Killer Dog!

It would at least be a good threat to use against Amber. Free Killer Dog!

Free Killer Dog! It takes a whole lot more than that to make me angry, Hon! I've had to put down a dog before because she bit one of my kids. I still regret it sometimes but it had to be done. My son put down a dog because it always growled and snapped at his little girl. A neighbor shot his dog when we lived on the ranch because I caught her eating one of my rabbits. Out there, any "pet" that was caught causing damage to another animal was fair game. It was understood that the owner of the injured party had the right to shoot to kill. There's no way I was gonna do that. That dog was HIS responsibility! Free Killer Dog!

These things happen. You weren't here when I first got her, so you don't know much about her. That's okay. Free Killer Dog! BTW, I've only had her since last April. Got her from a shelter and the person that gave her up didn't say why they were doing it. Free Killer Dog!

It seems she's got some pretty strong hunting instincts but even then, hunting dogs are trained and I don't think they're allowed to eat the kill.

We'll see what The Dog Whisperer has to say about that Lab. Free Killer Dog!

Pat! Free Killer Dog! I can't answer you! Free Killer Dog! Free Killer Dog!

Dee is upset about her bird but she's not mad at ME. She and I are okay. She kept me at her house, wouldn't let me come home until we both settled down. We hugged and cried together. I saw her today and she asked me if I was coming over later WITHOUT Amber. LOL I will... WITHOUT Amber.

Oh, boy!!! Just came back from Dee's house. The daughter isn't okay with me!! Free Killer Dog! Like it was MY fault and I set out to have Amber kill the bird?? Free Killer Dog! Free Killer Dog!

Oh, well... my friend is Dee, not Karen! Free Killer Dog! That wasn't nice, though.

Some more training and outside interests... maybe a job. LOL Maybe I'll make her carry a back pack with water bottles in it to wear her out quicker and give her the feeling that she's doing something.

Too bad the kid that I knew that had hunting dogs has moved from the area or I'd give her to him to train. Free Killer Dog!

Well he just found one more fuzzy. Sorry your neighbour can't understand that right now. Turkey late . on the run. Free Killer Dog! Free Killer Dog! Free Killer Dog! Free Killer Dog! Free Killer Dog!

I don't know if I missed it; it doesn't sound like she was on a leash? How come? She'd be on a choke chain within an inch of her life from now on with that behavior, were it me. No animal should be allowed to have a mind of its own if it hurts another like that?

Sorry to hear this, but we as humans, have to remember dog's instincts, hunting as one of them.
Oh, they love field mice, voles, moles, squirrels, and other little varmints too.
I don't like it but do accept it as long as I love my dogs, I know critters like the mentioned and yes, avians, can be targets.
I hope you weren't too harsh with Amber, she's just doing what instinct tells her. Please do not refer to her as a "killer dog" for that.
Sadly, freak things happen. Years ago we gave one of our birds to hubby's friend, her cat got it and killed it.
I wasn't mad at the cat, but was mad at the girl, cause she laughed it off, saying "kitty got the birdy", I was angry cause she was not responsible, it wasn't a freak thing in this case, and not much of an accident, but her ignorance and immaturity to think she could have them together.
I'm sure with your case it was an accident, and hope all can be forgiven in time.
Easy for me to say, but please do not be upset with yourself and/or the dog.
I hope you, your friend and Amber will be able to make amends.

Nah! She won't play with ANYTHING unless we tease her unmercifully with it! Free Killer Dog!

The owner of the bird is okay with me. It's her biotch daughter that gave me a rough time yesterday! Free Killer Dog! I didn't stop by today. Free Killer Dog!

LOL According to Cesar, she'd enjoy it... to be on a balanced life. Free Killer Dog!

I watched the episode last night where the dog was eating chickens. Cesar didn't do much really. It took a hunting trainer to work with the dog. It was beautiful to see the trainer and the little girl working with their respective dogs! I would LOVE to train Amber that way! First I have to train her to "come" on command. She races past Jerry and I when we run her out on the street. Free Killer Dog! Too bad we're not allowed to take dogs into the swimming pool. Free Killer Dog!

Sorry to hear about your (dog)astrophe Tomi... The fact that you rant and rave here is good... It means you don't do the same to the dog.

Maybe she went for the bird because there was no other "game" available? Wrong or right, it's a tragedy because the bird was loved.

Free Killer Dog! Like Dee said, she's used to being fed there and no one came out to feed her, so she TOOK her food. Free Killer Dog! I think it's as much the daughter's fault as anyones... if there IS fault.

No... I know she's got a lot of potential. She's not dumb by ANY means! I may have DH on board with some special training for her... after she gets a refresher course in the basics! Free Killer Dog!

No worries, ok? Free Killer Dog!

I watched the episode too. I think its the only episode where he hasn't done much for the dog. I guess its hard to fight instinct even if you are the dog whisperer Free Killer Dog! .

I am thinking about looking into retriever training for my dog. It really was beautiful the way the trainers dog was retrieving.

Perna, don't know how I missed this. Sorry.

She has a choke chain on all the time and is always on the leash when we're out. Because I'm in a wheel chair, I don't go up to my friend's porch when I stop by. I sit at the bottom of the stairs and she sits up on the porch right by the front door. That day, Amber had acted as if it was Dee she wanted to go see, but the screen door was open. I let Dee call Amber but Amber ignored her and made a quick right hand turn into the house. Neither of us was ready for that! Usually, she just runs over to Dee for a pet and a kiss. Free Killer Dog!

The T-shirt thing is at a standstill right now. Shame on ME!! Free Killer Dog! Free Killer Dog! I'm trying to get myself motivated again.

So far, Amber and I have had a "happy tail". LMBO! She's a handful outside the house, though! She's not used to me holding such a tight "leash" on her. We're working it out, though.
