Hi Friends,

What kind of vegetables do you like to plant in your gardens?

I am all excited over maybe having a vegetable garden this year. My husband and I picked up some vegetable seedlings the other day at a nursery.

We bought some red and yellow tomatoes, red and yellow onions, some brussel sprouts, and red cabbage. The lady said, I would be better off waiting until April 15th to buy other types of vegetables.

Has anyone else started their garden, or have plans to?

EJ

Here it's already time to plant potatoes and radishes. Of course I no longer have a yard, much less a garden, but I'm really looking forward to decorating my deck with some beautiful flowers! Vegetable Gardens

Not the Mama,

When do you usually start planning? Do you find the potatoes you grow yourself are more tender than what you buy in the store?

How big did your beets get?

Do you always shell your peas, or do you sometimes stir fry them whole?

Sweet Sunshine,

Are the strawberries fairly hardy then?

Sounds like you have a big garden. Care to share the dimensions.

Who does the tilling at your house?

I don't know if I'll be able to get to have a potted garden. In my old apartment I had 3 boxes and had plants in them but don't know the rules about that in my new apartment. If I get to I'll plant tomatoes, basil, and cilantro.

Desperado,

Are you planning a garden this year? If so, when will you plant?

My neighbor makes the most wonderful dill pickles from the cucmbers she plants. My mouth is watering just thinking about them.

January,

Thanks for the tip on homegrown potatoes.

Do you think you could make a little room for radishes on your deck?

Hi EJ711

Actually, I am renting so unfortunately I do not have my own little vegie garden.

Usually I plant in May -- on May "2-4" w/e.

Those pickles sound awesome. Cucs & tomatoes are my fave vegies.

Happy planting,

Des

If I was a Gardener. Unfortunately, I am in an apartment so the only Gardening I could do would be in a Huge flower pot Vegetable Gardens Would that work? I would love to see if I could actually make something grow Vegetable Gardens I have fake plants around my house, because I do bad with plants. Not sure if I would do any better with Veggie GardensVegetable Gardens

I would love to plant Carrots and Celery, but here in Arizona it's so hot. I don't know if they would even grow?

***Any tips for planting in 110 degree+ weather? Is it possible?***

Sorry about all the questions gang. I would love to try this this spring. Knowing all this info is important for me to understand the basics of Gardening.

you buy "seed potatoes" as they haven't been treated chemically...like the potatoes that the stores sell are.......you must have a little "eye" on every piece that you plant.it's the little red "bud" and that is what sprouts....the piece has to have that on it....... usually you would end up quartering one potato.

your planting and harvesting time will be different in Kansas. check your almanac....

We did a vegi garden last year and made a little green house over it in the fall. We had tomatos, lettuce, onions, spinach, potatos, parsnips (which are still out there as we were late)
My BF has stuck some peas in and they are sprouting but that is all. I need to get spinach and onions in as its late.
Jlove, Many years ago a girl I met had all her garden in coffee cans going up her stairs. It was beautiful. I tried but didn't have any luck as i didn't water enough at the time because of working. But you might try it. My neigbour does a garden in a barrel, various lettuces, onion, radish, basil. Looks pretty and doesn't take up much room.

My daughter want's to try that with the cans. We shall see what happens. It's so hot here that we would litterally be watering throughout the day. Water is a BIG problem here in Arizona. Try to conserve it and it's hard. They say the best time to water is between 3am and 6am, but I can't do that. When I was reading I thought they said 3pm and 6pm, but thats the worst time to water. EEK! What to doVegetable Gardens
