Hi ppls with horses,

This horse (Venus) is an Egyptian Arab, about 14.2 hands.

She fell into a barbed wire fence about a week ago, & as well as multiple cuts to the legs, she fell & pierced the eye on the barbed wire.

She won't let us put the eye ointment in, even with a twitch & a raised leg Horse with ulcerated eye

Any suggestions ????

Zorah,

Tie her head down very close to the fence so that her nose almost touches. Cover her eyes for a little while so she calms down. Have someone raise her leg and then uncover just the one eye and slip the ointment in it. I hope this helps.

Hugs,

Jan

What is a twitch? I am not familiar with that term. A little sedation will help if my ideas don't help.

Also, you can hold a bucket of grain for the horse to stick her nose in it and munch and it will be hard for her to move.

Please let me know how it goes.

Hugs,

Jan

An eye specialist came to see her yesterday.

He is inclined to think that the eye cannot be saved anyway.

THE TWITCH

The twitch consists of a loop of string on the end of a stick. You put the loop around the top lip of the horse and twist the handle around until the loop has grabbed tight on the lip causing it to look like a ball with whiskers on it.

This has the effect of tranquilizing the horse, subduing it and enabling the handler increased control and safety from injury. (although not guaranteed) On the vast number of occasions, this control device does the job.

Obviously, the twitch should be used as a last resort and kept for occasions such as helping the horse through treating a wound or some other injury, dispensing medication, worming or clipping. (I don't include clipping in the helping the horse. )

I'm so sorry about the horse's eye. Horse with ulcerated eye

I've never seen a twitch, but I have seen my Dad hold the top lip of a horse when all else failed.

Hugs,

Jan

She is a beautiful little filly, I wish I owned her, but unfortunately she belongs to someone I know irl.

She lives in council agistment (with barbed wire fences). If she were mine, I'd have been staying there with her, in a tent, since the injury. In fact, I'd never have agisted her somewhere with barbed wire fences, if she were mine.

Poor little Venus, I told her owner she wouldn't be able to look after a horse properly, but she wouldn't listen.

The filly, Venus, has been trailered to the eye specialist's place. It cost $1,000. As it was costing $900 daily for 3 vet visits this is probably worth doing.

Please send healing vibes, she is so beautiful.

Healing thoughts are on their way way for Venus.

What is agistment? It is paying someone to take care of your horse?

Hugs,

Jan

hhmm, agistment is not like that, if it is affordable.

they let you leave the horse in their paddocks, but you have to care for it yourself. it really only works if you are walking distance from the horse.

The infection has cleared up, but she still has a white spot in her eye. The eye specialist now thinks there is something in the eye & is sending her for surgery tomorrow. She has to go to the vetinarians school for the surgery (more trailer fees) because none of us can afford to pay for her to have private surgery.

Thanks to everyone who has answered this thread Horse with ulcerated eye

All any of us can do for her now is keep sending those healing vibes.

Venus has been moved to a relatives stable, much closer, only about 10 minutes drive.

We are back to putting in the eye ointment twice a day, but all your suggestions have helped a lot. Thanks so much Horse with ulcerated eye

It is just a matter of time now, maybe we will save the vision in the eye, she is doing way better than was expected, so keep those healing vibes coming, they seem to be working Horse with ulcerated eye
