Well, that's the headline on this story. How close? About three times the distance to the moon. Newsbait?

Yeah. Very close. Like way out there and not even an issue close. I agree, it's newsbait.

:\ WTF. I would say that's very much a cause for concern.

Sometimes astronomers have a different definition for 'close'.

I wasn't being sarcastic, it's just that large distances mean nothing in the enormity of space. Maybe this animated gif sums up just how close it will get

Gigantic asteroid to pass very close to earth today

Looks like a near miss from that perspective
Thanks for this!

Am I the only one who finds this interesting to read?

I'm so sick and tired of hearing about celebrity shiz and U.S. violence issues that I want to hear the drama that is going on in space.

Oh my goddess, does the movie Armageddon come to anyone's mind after reading this?

The passing asteroid discovered to have its own moon:

Its all relative. Given the unimaginable vastness of our universe that asteroid was pretty close. Any divergence from its course could have smashed us to tiny little bits. I sometimes wonder what happens to all of the junk that we have left in space. What is going to happen when the celestial fairies push that junk back into our own atmosphere?
