"Happy as a sandboy"

Or alternatively

"Happy as Larry" (whoever he was??)

There is a third but it's too rude to post here....

And also...

"If I had a brain I'd be dangerous"

Thanks for this!

I've been known to say: I'm just happy as poop!

I have always been perplexed by "You can't have your cake and eat it, too"

Like, B****... It's my cake! I AM going to eat it!

Most nonsensical. "More problems than Carter has pills."

Most laughing in "our" house.

"Lift with your legs not your back."

Dad and others cracking up laughing. Grandma and Mom confused..."what are you doing?"

"You said lift with your legs. Don't understand the purpose of lifting something up and down with your legs...butts on the floor not moving so why lifting with our legs not our backs?"

Two angry women. "You know what we meant and you stop encouraging her." Dad laughing louder.

"I don't know what you meant...Dad..do understand what was meant how does someone lift with legs not back."

Dad.."nooooo. Those meaningless sayings never thought show em what they are saying."

I knew if I did not lift with my legs and not my back, Mom and Grandma's upset words..your doing it wrong.

Do you know the origin of that saying?
It's from Carter's Little Liver Pills which were a humongously popular Patent Medicine.

You can lead a horse to water but nothing stinks worse than a wet horse.

Absolutely. I've been teaching mysefl German for several years and I can assure you I come across some weird idiomatic expressions, but of course English has its own weird ones, too. xD I don't think many idioms actually make any sense when you pick at the words used. I'd love to know the history behind idioms... why they mean what they mean; I find that stuff interesting.

My hubby made up his own along these lines...

"You can lead a horse to water, but if you can get him to float on his back you've really done something!"
