I'd love to have an old English Vespa! Sadly I have no place to keep it safe( no garage) between dangerous traffic here and bad drivers--- this really is SUV and giant truck state I don't think I'd last long.

I'm grateful to have a good car, which is perfect because my new neighborhood doesn't have public transportation. But I telecommute, so I don't get many miles on it, which is why it is leased.

We have good transportation here, thing is I can't afford it. I only allow myself to take the bus home if I have a lot of heavy things to carry. Otherwise I walk. Takes 30 minutes to walk from town so not bad. Usually I try to hitch a ride with my friend. When I was a kid I biked everywhere, but bike thefts are too common here.

I have a car. I've had it for 10 years. Where I live, there are no buses because I live about 20 minutes outside of the city (where there are buses). Where I live, everyone drives cars. I guess we're too lazy to walk. My city is segregated, blacks and whites, not intentionally it's just that's how it happened throughout the years. So black people tend to be poor where I live and they live in the city...most of them get around by bus or walking. White people live in the counties surrounding the city and drive cars. Of course, it's not totally segregated...plenty of white people live in the city and plenty of black people live in the counties....it's just not as common. My city is very prejudice against African Americans. Ever heard of the Ferguson riots? Yup, that's in my city.

But I digress...I drive everywhere. I never walk or ride a bike. No one does in my county.

This is a timely question as I right now have a decision to make.

I am on provincial disability assistance. It's not much. Operating my car takes about $150 a month and really is a big expense I find hard to justify (I can get a subsidized bus pass for $30). I do a lot of walking everywhere. But, the car gives me freedom and allows me to live an aactive lifestyle [I hike, I kayak, etc].

As we approach winter I am left with some major car expenses. Definitely new tires and a few mechanical issues too. I have a small amount of savings and a credit card. Do I invest in this car? Or do I park it and remove the plates until I can make a decision come spring?

That's a tough decision, maybe wait until spring and leave it alone for now?

Like Christina I live in BFE. It's 12 miles to the nearest anything. No way I can rely on public transportation, needless to say there isn't any out here. I live on a farm and need a pick-up truck. I drive a nine year old Tacoma. It gets decent gas mileage for a pick-up.
Thanks for this!

I drive a 10 year old Ram 1500 quad cab V8 pickup....living in the country & needing to haul a horse trailer......need the truck. I live about 10 miles out of the town but that's the part of town where there is really no shopping.....it's just the town.....everything is on the outskirts the other side of town. Getting crappy gas mileage but need the big truck to haul with & it's my only transportation with no public transportation at all in this town....not even a taxi. Have needed a ride when my truck was in for recall work & had to hitch with friends.

Honestly I when I get my horse here, I want to teach her to drive so I can use a carriage rather than my truck......there are some Amish around this area & I have seen they with their horse drawn carriage going down the road......that's the real transportation I would LOVE......who cares if it's only got 1 horse power....at least that horse power has a personality.

Exactly the same as you, OP. Minus the football bit. I can't, or won't drive. I don't trust myself behind the wheel. My OCD and anxiety would make me a danger to myself and others, and I'm just not going to do that just so I can get somewhere quicker, or... somewhere at all. xD It sucks, but the bright side is that it's healthier.
