Today is 42 deg C (107.6 F). I am doing housework. No choice as there are bunches of people coming here for New Year. I can barely breathe.

Summer should be festive. But all it means to me is sweat and flies! I hate being hot! I can't sleep, I can't breathe. I am so irritable. It will only cool down here from about May onward.

The wind keeps blowing. The grass is dead. The dead grass blows in the house and on the counter tops and window sills. I can't keep up with the sweeping and cleaning.

I just want to curl under my blanket with a hot water bottle and Amy.

Grumpy, grumpy, grumpy.

If I could send you some of our 30F degree air I'd share it gladly. I hate being hot too. What I always tell people is "If you're too cold you can always add more blankies, if you're too hot you can only strip down so far and then people call the law...AND YOU'RE STILL TOO HOT!"

And I don't know about you but I get sweaty and that makes me more miserable.

Yes!!! I hate sweating. Makes me feel terribly ungraceful and unladylike. (Also why I hate exercise )

I understand...humid hot summers I spend much of my time after working on something in a cool down shower. In the winter it's hot showers in the summer it's hot to wash off the sweat then cool to cool down....I live in my shower. I can't imagine that hot though it would get that hot when I was living in the Mohave desert.....dry weather tho....no humidity. That makes heat worse.

Hope you find a way to cool down

The poor dogs. They do have lots of shelter and water and I've just hosed them down. Hubby let Amy (much to her disgust) have a little swim in his new pool. My Mom gave my son and hubby water guns called Wa-zookers for Christmas and while they were in the pool, they made sure we all got totally sprayed!

But this tired body of mine didn't react well to 6 hours of cleaning in this heat. I've had a cool shower and a lie down on the couch, but I feel shattered! My head pounds and feet are echoing that.

But the house is clean. Until Friday, when I'll do it all again!

Same today! I didn't sleep a wink last night, just watched the clock tick by. Later today I am making a potato bake and sticky toffee pudding for tonight's festivities. But I am sick of sweating!

That's really hot. I remember taking a weekend trip one summer to Death Valley in California. It was about the same temperature. I camped at the Furnace Creek campground. I laid there on top of my sleeping bag with sweat pouring off me for about an hour. Finally, I got in my car and drove all night to a motel with air conditioning. (It was so hot that my shampoo bottle exploded inside my suitcase and covered all my clothes with blue shampoo goo.)

Wow that's hot. My husband and I have to wear ice vests when it gets above 90F. We both overheat easily. I don't like being sweaty either; it just slows me down.

I've been to Death Valley...luckily in the fall & NOT the summer. I lived in the Ca Mojave desert for about 17 years & there were days in the summer that it would get up to 105F. Never forget the summer we moved into our brand new house. I just had knee reconstruction before it was done arthroscopically. Huge full leg cast & the central air unit went out. It was 100F inside the house where I was stuck unable to drive & on crutches. Knew no one in the neighborhood & many houses were still vacant. Finally talked the builder into moving the AC unit from the unsold house next door to ours & getting it connected. My leg got swollen, went back to the surgeon & he opened the cast to make sure it wasn't infected. Then squirted bedidine onto my leg & closed the cast. The bad heat caused the bedidine to burn my skin..so 2 weeks later when they changed the cast, they found all my skin chemically burnt under the cast...2 more weeks with that cast....how miserable. I don't do well in heat either

It has been more than a week now and there has been little respite. The heat is normally like this around February / March which means we're in for a hot few months. I do cool down a little in the evening but my bedroom is very hot, despite a fan blowing on us. And I struggle to sleep.

Glad you got the pool..just in time for the hot weather...wish it helped more....yes, ceiling fans help me..I have one directly over my bed....but on hot humid days I just lay there sprawled out on the bed under the fan on full blast

I dipped in the pool last evening but the water was like bath water. It was nice, but not exactly refreshing.

Hubby installed a lovely ceiling fan in our room but has yet to fix the squeaks. So it just hangs there looking pretty.

Oh I hope he can get the squeaks gone....I love how the ceiling fan works. Hate that I broke the one in my computer room by knocking it out of balance...& not being able to figure out how to solve that problem. Two of the blades sheared off & flew across the room. Glad I wasn't home & in the computer room when that happened.

Bath water temp pool not great...but I find in hot weather I take a really hot shower & end it with cool, when I get out of the shower the temp room temp feels cooler & I usually have a room fan going which helps cool me down blowing across wet me

Heehee avlady - lots and lots of blankets!!

Just read on the news that parts of South Africa are reaching 50°C (122°F). That is so severe that there have already been a few deaths. My little town was mentioned as one of the hottest in the country. But it is a dry heat - no humidity as we're not on the coast.

What I would do for an aircon! But that is a complete luxury here and not a "standard" thing.

Maybe I should go to the mall

It is raining today! And has cooled down considerably. I don't know if other parts of South Africa is getting some rain. We are in the midst of a very severe drought. There are drop off points for water all over my town for donation to places with only sewerage water available.

According to my weather report - this respite will only last today and we're back to the hot temperatures tomorrow. So today - I will enjoy it while it lasts. I have ironing to do (always iron on Thursday's, and half the washing is still on the washing line, now soaking wet - but hey, I don't mind just to be cool and get some much needed rain).

I also slept much better last night because I didn't sweat the whole night long.

I wear cooling bandanas, around my head or my neck or both if its really too hot. T puts them on his terriers too. He says with them on, they dont pant all night long, poor things.

Here it's summer too, and the climate in B.A. is very humid. I absolutely hate this climate, especially in summer. If you go to the north or to the south of the country it's still hot in summer, but it's much more bearable (more dry).

Anyway, I like the cold. The heat makes me want to lie on the floor all day doing nothing.

We have had some cooler days of late and a little bit of rain yesterday. But our hottest months - Feb and March are still coming!

It is such a huge relief when I can do anything without needing or wanting to take a shower every 5 minutes from sweating so much.

Are window units terribly expensive there? When our air broke last summer I put one in the kitchen and one in my bedroom window then had a big fan to circulate the air and it kept the house tolerable.

I don't know if it will help you or not BUT if you put ice packs in a pillow case you can put it under your neck and ankles when you sleep. My doctor told me about it because they are major circulation points for the body it helps cool you down.

Unfortunately, air con units are so very expensive here. Not only to buy - but to run as well. Electricity is somewhat of a luxury here (sounds primitive, I know) and the rates are exorbitant. Plus, our landlord would probably not allow us to install one. A number of stores are selling these portable units that run on water (I think), but we haven't that kind of cash to lay out. We do have a fan in each room (except the kitchen, but I cart the lounge's one through if I'm baking).

I am longing for winter, when there will (hopefully) be snow on the mountains and we can use our little fire place every night. As is extreme as what our summer is, our winter of late, has been pretty unimpressive.
