Last Chance to See by Douglas Adams (the author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy). It's a non-fiction book where he travels around the world to find some of the most endangered animal species on the planet. I like it more and think it's even more funny (despite some of the animals being in rather bleak situations) than Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, yet Last Chance to See is much less well known book.
Thanks for this!

Another occurred to me.

The Periodic Table by Primo Levi.

He's a fascinating character and the warmest writer I know (despite a pretty dark life). He has an amazing spark and enthusiasm in writing about what he loves. I can't recommend it highly enough.

It's available to read via google search. Perhaps it is over 50 years old and copyright has expired. http://www.arvindguptatoys.com/arvin...odic-primo.pdf

Thanks, but what is it about? Science? Periodic Table is related to chemistry.

Thanks. I think you third it .

Actually, I am not sure. This would be my first novel. But I can tell I wouldn't like novels involving killings, and harming others physically. I also would not like Sci-Fi. So, no horror or Sci-Fi. Others are OK, but I need a glimpse into it to see if I would like it.

Nickname, here is the Amazon page for my suggestion, "Flowers for Algernon", where the first 5 or 6 pages are available as a free preview if you click on the image of the book. You can get a feel for the novel and the perspective in which it was written.

Amazon.com: Flowers for Algernon (9780156030304): Daniel Keyes: Books

Hard to explain. Non-fiction. He was a chemist so a lot of it is just his passion for chemistry but he also digresses heavily into other subjects - philosophy, love, people, etc. It's his tone that makes him stand out.

I'm going to suggest a quite old novel, Black Beauty by Anna Sewell.

A bit oddly this story about a horse is told in first person. But to me it never really seemed weird. You get to follow the horse through his life, a life that is not always easy. It can be a quite emotional story.

Thanks. I'll consider it.
