yea i cant afford expensive ones either but i suppose if you buy good quality ones they last longer, unless you have a child like mine who is destructive

My one set of sheets is so thin...that when I take them out of the warsher...I just have to shake them and they are dry.

MOJO, have you tried Tuesday Morning for sheets? They're closed right now, but you can buy online if you don't have a store near you (when they open again). I got a beautiful $300 set of 600 count sheets for $79 on closeout.

Really...I can afford $80.00. But then again...Canadian to American dollar...excise tax...postage...hidden charges...hmmm.
I am really cheap...I spend money but I just buy cheap stuff and lots of it. I only spend a quarter of my time in bed...I don't know if I want $200.00 sheets. I can buy a lot of candles for $200.00...gas for my car...tobacco...new clothes...printer cartridges. I could sew all my towels together and make a huge sheet...now that would give my warsher a work-out and a half. |

I have heard that before...quality before quantity...but I must admit that I am a bit fickle that way...I will consider the more expensive sheets...I would like some...hmmm.
Do they wash up any better than cheap sheets???

Oh my, I missed this thread - I love cleaning!!
I have washing powder (detergent?) and softener - that is all I use in my automatic washing machine - but I handwash all my son's white school shirts, and I pre-treat stains on other things with good old "sunlight soap" (probably only South African) ... works every time. My men are messy - so I do 5 to 7 loads a week!!!! Then again, I have an issue with smells so my own only once worn clothes go into the pot too! It doesn't seem to make a difference whether I use softener on my towels but I do try to limit it.

Do you iron????
My Grandmother used to iron everyone's underwear as well as teatowels and sheets...she only had four children so probably not much else to do...eh!!!! |

Yes, I do the ironing but I hang things out in a way that a good smoothing over with the hand means I don't have to iron it. (Don't have a dryer ... well I do - but it is in for repairs (with my husband) which means I shall probably never see it again). I never iron towels and underwear though I must admit I do iron all my tea towels. Actually, I do iron underwear - hubby wears boxers and I always iron those. Sigh!
I always iron in front of the TV - watching my music DVD's! Makes it bearable!

I only iron if I have to...like when I have 15 minutes to get to work and I need a shirt to go with my slacks or a skirt.
One quarter of my clothes are like new except for the wrinkles. They just hang in the closet, covered with cob webs...waiting for me to iron one day, when I have nothing else left in life to do. Oh..I do iron if I sew something new...I don't mend either. Does anyone here mend things???

yes i mend things but i also alter the lengh of things for my oldest daughter because she isnt very tall trousers/pants are to long so i take them up, i try to get her to buy 3/4 lengh things so they fit her

I have never owned a sewing machine (all-thumbs) so any mending done by me is very basic. I do have to sew up holes in my rough 'n ready son's clothes but any major mending / altering is always sent on to my mother-on-law.

I only have one big container of laundry detergent. one bottle of bleach, a nearly empty bucket of Oxyclean, a new bottle of fabreeze fabric freshener ( for teenage stinky clothes) and one bottle of fabric softener that I rarely use.
I only do about 7 loads of laundry a week now. at one time when all my kids were at home and small I had to do a minimum of three loads a day just to break even and that did not take linenes into account. Now that the kids are older and not wetting themselves etc I have less to do. |

I remember the mountain of laundry from the days of three children, a dog, a cat, a hamster, goldfish and a bunny.
I never caught up...I did laundry every day for years and still there was laundry to do...I used to do it on the run in and out the door to work. Once my washer broke down and I fell behind...it took me a year to catch up. Once my middle child brought home a head lice...just the one...I had to wash everything in the house...everything. It was a blur...the laundry soap company started to send me coupons for free vacations. I spent hours in the tub with Calgon waiting for it to "take me away." (False advertising there) There was no escape...laundry was my life. I stopped ironing. I just gave up...I convinced myself that I liked wrinkled clothing. I darn all the clothes that need mending over the garbage can...saying "darn, darn, darn" and then I drop it in. The kids are all grown now...with their own laundry delimmas. The cats, dogs, fish and other pets just a distant memory. Still to this day...everytime I open up the lid of the washer, I break out in a fine sheen of sweat...memories. The man I live with now...actually does his own laundry. To a woman with my "laundry past"...that is very romantic. It's like giving me flowers every week. I try to encourage independance in the laundry area as much as possible. I have another story about teaching my son to do his own laundry but not enough room here...later for that.

I use vinegar as fabric softener too. it is also the best for removing the urine smell from cloth diapers or anything else a child (or whom ever) wets. and it does not make anything smell like a salad.
