Hi Friends,

I'm stumped tonight.

Some of you may remember I posted about our wren having three batches of babies this year, when she usually only has two.

There were about four baby wrens in the nest yesterday, and while they have grown a lot since they first arrived, they didn't look like fledgling size to me. This morning they were all gone.

Has anyone had a similar experience, or other experiences bird watching they would like to share?

From the Prairie,

EJ

i have a nest of wrens in a boston fern. they look like they are almost ready to fly. it isn't unusual for wrens to rear three batches in one season.

i have woodpeckers in a big hole in a tree. starlings took it over and the woodpeckers ran them off. there are two pairs of wrens, so there must be another nest here.

i have two sets of hummingbird parents. so, there are two nests. did you know they feed their babies insects?

i have a male and female horned owl by the creek. haven't found their next yet as i don't want to spook them too much.

a big lizard laid eggs in a flower bed and i'm waiting for the babies to emerge.

toads are digging holes and i'm waiting on babies.

there is one bald eagle that flies around frequently. there must be a nest here.

tons of cardinals, blue jays, all sorts of sparrows, house finches, tufted tit mouses, squirrels and possums.

We had a blue heron visit us one year. He flies by every year at the smae time. We live in the suburbs of a buig city so for him to stop and fish out of our very small pond was a sight to see. He was HUGE about 6 feet tall and really lookwed like a dinosaur!

Fayerody,

Thanks for your note.

You are loaded with creatures!

We have hawks and wild turkeys, but I haven't seen any eagles out here yet. Bird watchers

Hugs,

EJ

Yes, I have watched a blue heron yearly who seems to summer at a pond near my school.
About the wrens...I had a nest of wrens at one of my houses, and they also looked too small to fly, yet the next day they were all gone. I suspected some other bird or predator got to them...sad.

One day I sat here and watched the crows caw caw caw, sittingon the roof across the road. then one went into the tree nearby and came out with a baby bird, then another did the same. then they all caw caw cawed away laughing . I was was ticked at them./ I know it is survival of the fitest but I really didnl;t like the way the crows seemed to laugh at their deadly escapade!
