Until the past couple of years, I never went into dollar stores, like Family Dollar or Dollar General, but I have to tell you that it is a great place for certain products....like detergent, toilet paper, and really most everything is much cheaper.
Most little towns have one of these stores, and just wanted to share a money saving observation!

I really like the Dollar Tree...everything is $1.00. I would give the kids $5.00 apiece and they would go hog wild!!!

I love dollar stores - there's a huge dollaramma (really that;s the name) near where I live and I shop for lots of stuff there.

It's easy to be snobbish when you can afford to be. When you have $30 to your name a week before payday and the dog chews your last spatula, you can't beat dollar stores. Dollar stores...

We have 2 here (town of 13,000). One is a "true" dollar store where everything in the whole place is a dollar, and the other has things up to $5 or so. The "true" dollar store has a much better selection. I just put together a care package for a PC friend from Goodwill and the dollar store! And if she doesn't read this, she'll never know the difference. Dollar stores...

Yes, Candy and Split...
I even buy many food items there!
My daughter has told me that dollar stores and Big Lots remind her of WV, from which she has tried to distance herself, and so it's an image thing, I guess. I just know it saves me a lot of money, and, like you say, Candy, when you only have a few dollars, you can still get much of what you need!

One thing I wouldn't recommend getting at the dollar store:

Those cd things you put on your visor in your car to hold cds. I got one at the dollar store and it ruined each cd I put in it.

But I love dollar stores for just about everything else!

I'm not big on dollar stores, but a lot of it has to do with my OCD. I love when Jay Leno has the funny stuff he finds in 99-cent stores. Hilarious!

The other problem I have with dollar stores is, they won't let me buy any dollars! You go to a furniture store, they let you buy furniture; a grocery store lets you buy groceries; a music store lets you buy music. What's wrong with these dollar store people, not selling dollars? Dollar stores...

Well, that is certainly a different take on it.

We don't have dollar stores in my country. I guess our equivalent would be what we call The Crazy Store and The Excitement Store but these are by no means any cheaper than any other store, well - maybe just a few things are but because the quality is so sub-standard, it doesn't pay to buy these things.

There is very little (at the current exchange rate) that we can buy for a dollar. Not even a loaf of bread AND a litre of milk.

we have the similer shops called pound shops or pound strechers, there are diferant takes on them, it depends what you want and you are paying very little so the quality in some stuff is very little, but some times you can find a bargin
£1.00 GBP = $2.01701 USD
our bread for a quality loaf is about 68p and 4liters of milk is 98p

Oh, what I didn't mention - even though I spoke of bread and milk - our "cheaper" stores don't sell food. At all! For that it is regular grocery stores at regular (exhorbitant) prices.

I agree about the paper towels, and pegs - microwave ware and plastic ware is also cheaper at our "Crazy" Stores. And candles, oh and stationery too!

I buy stocking fillers at Christmas time at our Crazy Store - small little toys that will break in a day but that are really cheap.

Yes! And gift bags!

I've just thought of something else, I said they didn't sell food at all - sorry - plenty of sweets, novelty and otherwise - right at the counter while you're waiting to pay. Drives the kids insane!

Oo, I love dollar stores! We've got a plethora of them around here - Family Dollar, Dollar Store, Dollar General, Country Dollar - the list goes on & on. Also a big fan of Odd Lots. It's a hell of a lot of fun to go look around at those kinds of places when I'm feelin hypomanic. Gotta make sure not to take too much money with me though -- I've gotten carried away & purchased $50 worth of random dollar store stuff that I didn't really need in a single trip....! Dollar stores...

Yes!!!! Amazing how easy it is to do that. I somehow always buy something or another that I don't need. But I usually regret it because as I said in an earlier post - the quality is terrible! (And some things are not always cheaper).

Kitchen clothes, sponges, dishdrying towels - now I don't mind those being a poorer quality - I'm a neat / clean freak so I go through heaps of these - much cheaper to buy them at the "Crazy" Store!

Interesting comment about the quality of the stuff in your bargain stores, Sabrina. Actually, here the quality is about the same for many things as in the more expensive stores. I once dated a trucker who delivered to Big Lots and dollar stores as well as the more expensive chains, and he informed me the stuff is the same in both places.
Muffy ...you got it! Petfood/cat litter, detergent, paper goods...can't beat the prices at dollar stores.

LOL, Beautifulconfusion! I do the same! Go in for one thing, and come out with several bags, but it's usually things I DO need!

I LOVE Big Lots! Its all stuff from the regular stores, mostly overstock, so you're getting regular stuff for WAY cheap!
