I stay in hotels in Costa Rica all of the time. I too just ask for clean dry towels,no maid service. I don't like people in my room either. Bipolar thing? Plus I always have lots of cash. Passport.
A question:are you aware of anyone stealing- I mean the housekeeping staff. ??
I read a story about a nice hotel that masked men went in and tied up guard. Then robbed and raped the guests.
Then Kardashian in Paris.
I know the owners in the places I stay.
In the states, an Indian family told me it's a tradition,if a boy from India doesn't get accepted to medical school, the family buys a cheap motel in the USA. Then the son and his wife and kids have to live in motel and manage it!

We didn't steal, but at my former hotel if guests left something in a vacant dirty it was a free for all as long as it wasn't unopened wine or something valuable. I have tons of stuff I kept from checkouts.
