I'm getting my very first tattoo next week (I'm 47!). How much does it hurt? I'm getting one on each wrist. FYI, I've had two children, one without an epidural (not by choice, though). I think I'll be OK, just curious about everyone's opinions.

Being a person who Self-Harms the pain was erotic. If you can have a child you can survive a Tattoo...

I have a Tramp-Stamp on my lower back of Butterflies, The Words "Inside I Am Dying," along my back at the top, and a butterfly just over my panty line on my right hip in front...

My wife wants to get tattoos together.

She has one, I have none.

I'm 37. I think the tattoo ship has sailed.

My daughter and husband have one. It depends on the location. It's not as bad as childbirth, though.

One massive chest piece neck down sternum and shoulder to shoulder The only part that bothered me was the part that reached up to the tips of my shoulders. Second tattoo down spine on back and shoulder to shoulder (dragonfly). Fell asleep both sessions. Nothing in comparison to birthing a 12lb baby.

You will have no problem, I have four pretty big tattoos and I can't wait to get more.
The little bit of pain is a piece of cake and can be almost euphoric.

Well, considering I kicked the lady who pierce my ears back when I was 7 (it was more so a reflexive response than a voluntary one), I am sort of apprehensive about getting inked. I'd be too afraid that I'd hurt the artist in some way.

If I were to be brave enough, I'd probably get something on my shoulder. Tramp stamps don't appeal to me.

I have five, one is on the inside of my left wrist. For me that hurt the most because of the veins. But I still want more.

Nice tat, fishin fool! Your artist is very talented.

I'm going to get my more inspirational tattoo first, in case I chicken out before the artist starts the second one. I'm so stoked, though, I think adrenaline will carry me through it if nothing else. I have anxiety issues but am on medication for it (and medications for other things) so I don't think that will be a factor. It's nice to know it's not too painful. I've read different things. I really should stop Googling stuff!

I've picked out my two designs (not tiny tats, but not really big ones either, maybe medium-sized) and gotten my 25 yo daughter's approval (she's jealous...wants tattoos, but no money yet..but plenty of plans for when she has some!). Made the appointment for Thursday.

Anyone want to divulge what the process is for getting a tattoo? Do you meet with the artist to discuss it, maybe allow him/her some artistic freedom, or what? What will happen when I get there?

Depends on the artist and what you want. If you have a design, give it to the artist and let them do their thing. They have an eye for what will or won't look good on the body. Sometimes things look good on paper, but don't translate well to ink. If it's an option, email them your design ahead of time. They'll be able to have it worked up and ready to go by Thursday.

In my case I usually meet with my artist once ahead of the day.
Then I email him stuff that may be similar to what I want.
Then he comes up with a sketch and the day of the appointment we may
make some changes but you will be surprised how close they come to
what you want. Sometimes they even nail it on the first try.

Congratulations on getting your first tattoo next week!

I was 42 when I got my first tattoo. I have many tattoos now (I'm 54).

My wrists are tattooed; definitely one of the less painful locations. The underside of the wrists (over the veins) are more sensitive, but still not terribly painful.

You'll be fine

This was my inspirational tattoo and the first one I got.
I had a small semi colon worked into it.
