I hear that there are lots of people who consider Psychology a weird major. Not just due to a poor job market, every major has that problem, but due to the fact that the stigma is that anyone who majors in Psychology will try to read other people's minds. While this could potentially be true for some people, it is not always the case. And I hope no one ever majors in Psychology just to become a professional mind reader as well. It is one thing to learn social cues, but a completely different scenario to constantly try to read other people's minds to the point of creeping them out. Has anyone ever told you Psychology is a weird or bad major? What was their reasoning behind it? Just curious.

I don't think psychology is a weird major. In addition, I believe you should major in whatever you want to, regardless of what others think.

I was a psych major and now have a Ph.D. in it. I became a psych professor!
So what if people think it's weird! That's their problem. ![]() But I do suggest you pick a second major, since the job market is poor for undergraduate psych degrees. ![]() |

In this day and age, where working hard alone isn't enough to make a decent living; where one needs intelligence, cunning, and the ability to understand how people think to truly get ahead in life, I consider having at least some education in psychology essential.
With that being said, the only problem that I see with a full blown psychology major is the fact that to become a psychologist or therapist of any kind, you need a Ph.D. Unless you're fortunate enough to come from a wealthy family, than you are bound to get into a bunch of student loan dept and end up spending many years of your life away on your education instead of enjoying it (unless you actually enjoy college, in which case, more power to you!). Once you obtain said Ph.D, the job market sucks and it's hard to make decent money as a psychology major, especially with all of the student loan debt. If psychology really is your thing though and you want to do something with it, I say go for it. Nobody has a right to judge you for doing what you're passionate about. One really does need to be a passionate person to want to be a psychology major though because there are other majors or paths in life that make more money with less time and money required to obtain them. |
