I posted this elsewhere before. I'm just curious what others might score.

The test has 60 questions. Please take it and report your results.

I just took it again and I scored 22/80.

There were some questions I would have answered differently many years ago.

https://psychology-tools.com/empathy-quotient/

Edit: A bonus question if anyone wants to answer. Would you consider yourself an empathetic person or not?

Thanks for taking the test. Mind answering the bonus question I just added?

My answer, no I don't consider myself an empathetic person. That has never been my strong point. Try as I have, though.

I think this test is biased towards ASD descriptors and doesn't really capture empathy levels so much as autistic traits.
Thanks for this!

There are different types of empathy. Cognitive empathy and emotional empathy. Of those two, the emotional side of empathy my therapist liked to call sympathy.

But I think this test measures the emotional side of empathy well. People with personality disorders can also score very low, not just autists.

Emotional empathy is not the same as sympathy

The problem is too many of the constructs in the test are focusing on social functioning, not necessarily empathy. Someone can be uncomfortable in social situations due to social anxiety for example and yet still be very empathic (I am). The test tends to see one as indicative of the other, this is a bias.

Then don't take the test.

It says right on the test:

The test was developed by Simon Baron-Cohen at ARC (the Autism Research Centre) at the University of Cambridge.

Of course, but I think it's useful to understand and discuss its limitations all the same

49, guess I'm not as empathetic as I thought I was, I'm sure being a hyper-introvert doesn't help

44/80, seems weirdly low for such a bleeding heart but they got me on my social ineptitude.

44 for me. I think my score would have been higher in years gone by. Being very empathetic took a toll on me and I've shut it down to a degree for self preservation.

Self-report. Sixty questions might get to a few preconscious degrees of empathy, the learned super-ego and of that to only a shallow depth like everyday courtesies. But what of the need to retaliate for wrongs that you have secretly adjudicated, not to mention hurts for lost loved ones, how does empathy truly play to those heart strings after seasoning? You really recommend this self-report questionnaire on such an uncasual faculty? I have had no I won the lottery happiness, for example, how am I to empathize with some that keeps winning the lottery? Your questionnaire might help you answer here with a proper score or does it let you down?

My old score was 30/80, a few months ago.

My new score is 29/80, so it went down by one point.

I do have autism though. So that probably explains why.

As for your question, I consider myself a empathic person sometimes. It really depends on the situation.

Meh. I thought this test was a little more intuitive than most other online tests. While this gives an arbitrary number, it's just for fun and to compare with others - which was really the whole point of this thread.

Not at all. In fact it's been fun to compare where I am at with others - especially empaths.

Thanks to everyone that participated.

You are a whiz, that's what you are. A real live wizard. Point your wand and poof !!! :What is your Empathy Quotient?: Empathy is so trivial as to have become a pastime for our amusement . . .one that doesn't rely on one's personal experience of a milieu of emotions from joy to pain. Are we having fun or are we honing our social skills? Or is it both?

My my. Well certainly some have a certain flavor or taste for certain pastimes, that goes without saying.
Thanks for this!

Eric Berne. Games, past times, occupations . . . Empathy is a procedure, I might say. How is it possible for an individual to quantify a procedure?

My answer, no I don't consider myself an empathetic person. That has never been my strong point. Try as I have, though.
I have always been highly sensitive person. Not something I would have chosen because it causes me more grief and pain which I find hard to tolerate. Sometimes feels like a curse. It's hard to understand when an emotion is mine or another persons. I often feel relieved by removing myself from a particular place or the other person goes.

A couple of years ago another person said that I was an empath. I have never heard that term before but it made so much sense when I looked into it.
Thanks for this!
