I realize that for those of you in the frozen north black ice is not remarkable, but I'm in central Florida. We are a subtropical area. There was black ice on one of the local roads Thursday morning. It was a first for the area. Saw the cartoon below and thought it applied.

On a humorous note my poor chickens were totally confused when they tried to get a drink of water and discovered it was solid. They kept pecking at the "water" and couldn't figure out what was wrong. Liz came to their rescue and broke up the ice.

black ice in Florida!

I remember being in Bradenton Fla. years ago and the temp. dropped down to
around 30, I was quite surprised I guess I never thought it got that cold in Florida.

Do cars have ABS braking down there? Pump your brakes instead of solid breaking. Know too my friends who are not used to these conditions that there is a difference between getting out of a skid depending on whether the vehicle is front or rear wheel drive. If your vehicle is front accelerate out of a skid. Also, if your vehicle is a manual (standard) transmission be sure to gear down then brake. This keeps the wheels engaged on the ice and is thus far safer and easier to drive on snow and ice than an automatic. Remember too that 'all wheel drive' is not 'four wheel drive'.

Stay safe!

I live in Canada and we get black ice on a more regular basis. Its still terrifying to drive with black ice on the road. Even with winter tires and lots of experience. I can't imagine what its like in Florida! That's crazy.

Also the chicken story is sooooo cute. Wish I could have seen it.

Highway patrol closed the road that had black ice. Lots of folks down here are northern transplants, but most folks would not know how to deal with it.

My poor plants in the yard are suffering from the cold. I brought the ones in pots in the house before it got cold. Covered the tender ones planted in the ground. Wind blew some of the covers of. Poor plants got nipped. I'm hoping they come back from the roots in the spring.

Yeah, the chickens were funny. They'd peck at the solid water and look at me as if saying WTF?!?!?! The cats have enjoyed to cold weather. None of them go outside and they are weenies about the cold. I have an heated mattress pad on my bed. The whole joined me at night. I turn the pad on to warm up the bed before I crawl in. A couple would take over the bed before I even got there. I should get a picture of BG (dog) wearing his down vest. The poor guy is short haired and doesn't have a spare ounce of fat on him. He really struggles with the cold. I have a fleece blanket and a down vest for him when it's cold. He is quite handsome in his vest!

I have a friend who hit a patch of black ice when he lived in Illinois. He was driving a VW Bug, spun out and smashed into a snowplow. He was in the hospital for a couple of months he was hurt so badly. I'm so glad I don't have to drive in snow/sleet/slush etc.

We are dealing with glare ice on sidewalks and walkways. I had to dig out my mountaineering ice krampons (boot spikes) and grab my set of spike hiking poles.

I live in North Florida, and just a few days ago I woke up to walk the dogs and it was 27 out...it didn't even get that cold normally in Montana when I lived there (I lived on the Western edge of the state, which is warmer). Like literally as cold as the coldest winter I spent in Montana...ridiculous. And worse, all my cold weather gear I keep at my mom's house in NC, because that's the only time I need it, when I visit her...I was miserable.
