So I go see the eye doctor yesterday, cause my vision has gotten notably worse.

And the doctor tells me that once you reach 'the four-oh', that it's normal for vision to decline and to have increased risks of developing things such as glaucoma and cataracts.

I'm in my (lower) 40's and I couldn't help but think of that phrase '40 is the new 30'.

Let's see...

My vision has gotten noticeably worse which will require real glasses.

In the last year my knees hurt atleast half the time.

Some times I wake up with back pain.

And my little toe on my foot, which since my 20's has had this problem where some times when I step down on my foot, it feels like fire and it hurts, and that has gotten A LOT worse in the last year.

So this is what 30 feels like? lol.

I think it's a bunch of crap, lol.

(I'm trying to be funny and sarcastic, but I'm actually serious)

The minute I turned 40 my eyesight went, too.

Sure, we may look fabulous at 40 and appear to be 30, but we don’t SEE so good!

Yup - in my 40's graduated to progressive lenses which I have to say are a real pain. My eye Dr. who I've been seeing for years actually told me, yeah it's all downhill after 40.

While, yes, my physical health began to deteriorate once I turned 40, I would say life only just started at 43.

It's funny I am approaching 40, and my eyesight has been going for quite some time, so some would say I am ahead of the game! (Not to downplay what you are feeling though). Also, I have noticed little aches and pains popping up, which I know CAN'T be good.

To be honest, I think people who say '40 is the new 30' have like a team of specialists, (cosmetologists, make-up crew, personal trainer), like at their disposal. A lot of us don't have that luxury. But, I think I could use more physical exercise though, that might help things a little.

That "40 is the new 30" stuff is a load of crap. Our bodies are human bodies that go through the natural aging process.

The week I turned 40 my eyesight changed quite drastically.

Ditto with the eyesight...I had perfect vision until I was in my early-40s. It has something to do with the muscles in your eyes weakening. I'm going to design a Blow-Flex for eyeballs. I'll make a fortune!

I know right? Or they are personal trainers themselves. :P

I'm 65, been wearing glasses since junior high thanks to astigmatism. However NO glacoma or cateracts.

My only aches & painsare from injuries I have had in the past due to sports & staying young with activity.

I can tell yiu when the weather is changing from the ACL knee surgery I had in 87, the fractured hip I had mid 90's & the fractured back from a few years ago. The broken finger from in the mid 90's flares up sometimes too. Every injusy was horse or racquetball related & I still ride but my farm has taken the place of racquetball. I would rather die being active than fading away in a nursing home.

I just also know that my REAL LIFE started at 54 (10 1/2 years ago) so I likevwhete I am.

What bothers my eyes the most is using my phone like a computer. There are times where everything is fuzzy for almost an hour after using my phone like a computer then my vision returns to its normal with glasses

Good point, Eskie, do we hurt our eyes using the computer so much?

When I turned 40 was when I knew I couldn't stay in the military anymore. I couldn't keep the weight off and my physical stamina was going as well, even though I exercised every day.

I'm 52 now, and I'm okay with my body as it is. I mean if I even just ate air and exercised all day there's no way I'll have that pre-40 body. So I make peace with where I'm at and work on my health.

People who say 40 is the new 30--maybe emotionally, but mid-life crisis happens there as well. Once you get over the hump of realizing your time on this planet is limited, a lot of things are let go.

I got my first bifocals right around age 40. And my skin went noticeably drier too. My forehead just started flaking, right out of nowhere. It didn't do that when I was 39.

Yep, like so many others have said, it's the eyes that seem to go first then, you have more trouble keeping weight off, you're tired all of the time and you even start napping more.
I've gotten to where I just don't really want to do anything any more unless the weather is warm enough for a good walk.
Thanks for this!

I think the idea of the term is about the increasing longevity over the years

This is a very good point. Is the fact that our eyes are going at earlier ages, BECAUSE of this new age of technology? You know computers, phones, etc?

I wonder.....

I do know for a fact, that I find myself taking off my glasses A LOT more these days, (after staring at any screen of some sort), and rubbing my eyes for relief, and sometimes they even start to water, so I just sit back and listen to music or watch TV (which isn't a great substitute because its a type of screen too).

But yeah, its definitley something to think about.

This is the same principle, I think, as the age of adulthood. Some societies consider you an adult as soon as you're physically able to reproduce. In modern Western culture, at least, most people have been at that point for several years before they're considered legally adults.

My folks starting around their 40's used to have their tackle boxes of meds that when younger asked what the pills were for and my mom's response was that they were her glue pills. Seemed silly at the time, how could a bunch of little pills hold you together (?) and now I cannot function without my own tackle box now in my 40's.

When I went to see the eye doctor because I was having to hold things out way out from away from me now, and I asked him why since I was near-sighted this was odd but that I did not want to hear because I was 'getting older' or because it was 'age' half heartedly; he said instead it was because I had now developed short arm disease.

Because western culture requires more preparations within it in order to be ready to have a child

If I look back at my grandparents & my parents, they became basically inactive around the age of 65 & they wore OLD PEOPLES cloths.

Me, I'm still riding horses & caring for my own farm & wirking & doing volunteer work like when I was younger. Everyone else my age who owns their farms is doing the same thing. It's like there is no age barrier any longer, we just keep doing what we have always done until something physical happens that forces us to be unable to do it any longed no matter what age that happens. I know lady's in their 80's still caring for their farms & animals.
